This paper describes two kinds of topology protection schemes available of Loop-O9400R.
1. MSP (Multiplexer Section Protection) 1+1.
In this protection schemes an entire span (including all timeslots traveling on that span) is protected.
For SDH that span is defined as a Multiplexer Section. For SONET it is defined as a line.

Add/Drop Capacity:
TM = 252 E1 (Limiting factor is STM-4 capacity);
ADM = 378 E1 (Limiting factor is the add/drop capacity of the 63 x 6 E1 cards.)
Advantages:
A simple, two (2) fiber layout
Cost of Advantages:
No protection against a fiber cut and/or optical circuit pack failure

ADM = 378 E1’s with MSP protection (Limiting factor is the add/drop capacity of the 63 x 6 E1 cards.)
Advantages:
All tributary traffic is protected against a fiber cut and/or optical circuit pack failure
Cost of Advantages:
Four (4) fibers are required. Maximum 252 E1’s capacity at head ends (TMs)
NOTE: To achieve the best protection schemes possible, the working fibers shall take different routes in
different fiber bundles

Add/Drop Capacity:
252 E1’s with SNCP/UPSR protection (Limiting factor is the bandwidth of the STM-4 aggregate line.)
Advantages:
Two (2) fibers only; well protected against a fiber cut and optical circuit pack failure.
Cost of Advantages:
Ring topology is a must
NOTE: To achieve the best protection schemes possible, the working fibers shall take different routes in
different fiber bundles

Add/Drop Capacity:
378 E1’s without protection (Limiting factor is the number of E1 cards on O9400R)
Advantages:
Two (2) fibers only; maximum number of E1’s is 252
Cost of Advantages:
Ring topology is a must. Half of the traffic will be affected when fiber cut.

Add/Drop Capacity:
63 to 378 E1’s (Limiting factor is the number of E1 cards on O9400R)
Advantages:
Two fibers only; adding/dropping more than 252 E1’s per node
Cost of Advantages:
Ring topology is a must. Half of the traffic without protection will be affected when a fiber is cut.
NOTE: To achieve the best protection schemes possible, the working fibers shall take different routes in
different fiber bundles

Add/Drop Capacity:
252 E1’s with double protection (Limiting factor is the bandwidth of the STM-4 aggregate line.)
Advantages:
Double protection is provided by SNCP/UPSR and MSP
Cost of Advantages:
Ring topology is a must; four (4) fibers are necessary
NOTE: To achieve the best protection schemes possible, the working fibers shall take different routes in
different fiber bundles
