Drill Bit Classifier

Updated Septem ber 2008
World Oil offers this com prehensive listing of
m ajor m anufacturers' drilling bits to aid
drilling supervisors and engineers in field Form ation Categories
selection. W hile this listing has been Nom enclature
published annually for several years,
changes from year to year are significant. Com panies Surveyed
Prior to ordering, users should consult the Drill Bit Classifier Tables
m anufacturer to verify availability and
specifications.
How to use tables. The following tables are divided into six form ation
categories. W ithin these are listed m ost available drilling/ coring bits by
type and m anufacturer. To use the listings, identify the form ation to be
drilled, decide which bit type is appropriate, i.e., roller cone, fix ed cutter,
steel tooth, insert, diam ond, etc., and then choose the m anufacturer.
Com panies were ask ed to list bit data by: 1) IADC code, 2) readily available
sizes (special sizes are often available on request), 3) recom m ended W O B
in lb/in. diam eter, and 4) codes for special features and usage, a
com bination of IADC and World Oil special codes (see Nom enclature).
IA DC codes. The Bit Classifier utilizes the International Association of
Drilling Contractors’ (IADC’s) classification system for roller cone and fix ed
cutter bits. The standards for these classifications are two technical papers
that appear in the IADC Drilling Manual, 11th Edition, Chapter A, Sections 2
and 3. The two papers are "The IADC roller bit classification system ,"
adapted from IADC/SPE Paper 23937, presented Feb. 18 – 21, 1992, and
"Developm ent of a new IADC fix ed cutter drill bit classification system ,"
Paper IADC/SPE 23940, presented Feb. 18 – 21, 1992. All m anufacturers
were ask ed to subm it data based on these classification system s.
Formation categories. The tables show six form ation categories
corresponding to the IADC form ation types, as described below. Com panies
were ask ed to list any discrete bit in only one form ation type, leaving the
user to decide about application in harder, or softer, rock . Nevertheless,
som e duplication of sim ilar bits in m ultiple form ations rem ains. The
form ations are:
Soft, including soft sticky. Low com pressive strength and high
drillability, such as clay, m arl, gum bo, unconsolidated sand.
Soft to medium. Low com pressive strength, inter-bedded with hard
layers, such as sand, shale, anhydrite.
Medium. Hard with m oderate com pressive strength, such as shale,
chalk , anhydrite, sand.
Medium to hard. Dense with increasing com pressive strength but
non- or sem i-abrasive, e.g., shale, siltstone, sand, lim e, anhydrite.
Hard. Hard and dense with high com pressive strength, som e
abrasive layers, such as sand, siltstone.
Extremely hard. Very hard and abrasive, lik e quartzite and volcanics.

Nomenclature
World Oil shows special features as codes, which include 16 designed by

Companies Surveyed
Com pany nam es, as shown in the bit type listings, were shortened to
conserve space. Full nam es and a central m ailing address are shown below.
Com panies with an asterisk by their nam es did not reply to a request for
updated inform ation, so their 2002 listings have been repeated.
