Claim: The difference between the number of CUNE male students who believe that
both invested the same amount of effort in a relationship and number of UNL male
students who believe that both invested more effort into the relationship.
Definition of Parameters:
H0 = P1 = P2
H 1 = P1 ≠ P2
Description of Data Collection: The data was collected by making a survey and
then administering the survey to CUNE male students outside of the Janzow
cafeteria not take the survey as they wanted too as to avoid bias from people we
know. Then to survey UNL students we went into downtown Lincoln and asked
people if they were UNL students and if they were if they were willing to take the
survey. If we had wanted to take the survey on campus we would have had to have
gone to the UNL student life office for permission.
Summary of Data:
UNL DATA:
18 2 0 0
19 2 0 0
20 3 1 0
21 2 1 0
22 0 2 0
23 0 0 0
24 0 2 0
No Age Given 0 1 0
CUNE DATA:
18 1 1 2
19 2 2 4
20 0 3 3
21 1 2 4
22 0 0 1
23 0 0 0
24 0 0 0
No Age Given 2 1 1
P=.00057
P1=.5, p2= 0
˄p= .3260
Conclusion: Reject the hypothesis ( H1) because the Test statistic does not fall within
the critical values.
Conclusion, Summary of Meaning, and any Bias that could be Present: This
project was very useful in understanding how to do a Two Proportions test. While we
probably would never try to explain how to do this test with our new found
knowledge, but for us and this class it was very helpful. In the end our data was an
interesting mix of 0% for P2 and 50% for P1. Even though we didn’t look at it before
hand and Kelsey just stated a claim with no previous knowledge of the survey or
results. I would recommend for future classes doing this project to probably start
from scratch so no bias and previous knowledge can affect the data. When we
gathered the data at CUNE during the lunch hour when most students, both those
who live on and off campus, eat which means we got a very good sample of the
student body. However, because the UNL student body is much larger than the
CUNE student body the number of males surveyed might not represent the student
body.
