The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK),
Surathkal is located in Mangalore City, Karnataka State,
India. Surathkal was earlier a small coastal town but with
rapid growth of the city, itis now included within the city
limits of Mangalore, Mangalore is the headquarters of the
coastal District of Dakshina Kannada and boasts of being
an important centre of business and trade in Karnataka
State. The presence of an all-weather major port at
Mangalore has seen rapid industrial growth in the
hinterland covering large parts of Karnataka and
extending up to the state capital, Bangalore. Mangalore
has also been ear marked for establishment of Special
Economic Zones and Information Technology Parks.
Dakshina Kannada District boasts of 100% literacy and is
well known forits educational institutions. Mangaloreis a
popular tourist destination and is well known for pristine
beaches, temples and unique cuisine.
Sri U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and a philanthropist
contributed immensely to the development of the coastal
region of Karnataka. Among the many achievements to
his credit, his effort towards establishment of the
Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now NITK) at
Surathkal is probably the most significant one. In
recognition of his role as the founder and architect of
NITK, the campusis named after him as Srinivasnagar’

Electrical) under affiliation to University of Mysore
1965 - Chemical and Metallurgy UG programsstarted
1966 - industrially oriented PG programsin industrial Structures and Marine Structuresintroduced
1967 - Grantof UN special fund and UNESCO International experts assistancein development of PG programs
1971 - UG program in Electronics & Communication introduced
1980 - Affiliation shifted to newly formed Mangalore University
1984 - UG program in Mining Engineering introduced
1985 - UG program in Computer Engineering initiated
1988 - Master of Computer Application PG Program started
1990 - PG program in Materials Engineering started
