CALL FOR PAPERS

NAASR ANNUAL MEETING

SAN FRANCISCO, CA
NOVEMBER 18-20, 2011

Theme: Religion and the Disciplines

One characteristic about the current institutional context in which we engage in the
academic study of religion is that religion has become a salient topic across the disciplines.
Recent articles have proclaimed that religion is one of the hottest topics for new graduates in
history and sociology, for example. But this is true across university departments and
programs beyond even the humanities and the social sciences.

We invite proposals for papers and panels that reflect on this situation as a significantly new
context for the study of religion, one that is quite distinct from the historically
interdisciplinary nature of religious studies. How does this situation change how we
understand the object of our study? How does it influence method and theory in the study
of religion? What particular contribution does the scholar of religion make in this new
context?

We also invite other thematically focused panels, including book panels addressing a single
significant publication in the study of religion.

We encourage members also to pursue co-sponsorships of panels with AAR Program Units.
The AAR has granted us additional program space for such co-sponsorships.

Proposals should be sent via email to Winnifred Sullivan at wfs2@buffalo.edu by April 1,

2011.
