Purascharana (the ritual done for energizing a mantra; the mantra has to be reci

ted for as many lakh times as the no. of syllables in the mantra; 1/10th of that
should be done as homam; 1/10 th of homam no. should be done as tarpanam; and 1
/10th of tarpanam should be done as annadhaanam. In the case of Gayathri mantra,
24 lakh repititions, 2 lakh forty thousand oblations in homam, 24 thousand tarp
anam and feeding 2400 persons is the recommended ideal! However, in case you are
not able to afford homam, tarpanam, and annadhaanam to the suggested extent, yo
u have to chant 10% of 24,00,000 in lieu of homam, tarpanam, and annadhaanam, an
d feed as many pious persons as you can within your economic limitations)
