It may be an extended experiment, the design ofa novel piece of equipment, the development of software, ete. Whatever its, t will form an important pact of your development asa professionel engineer. It will evtinly be of interest to prospective employers when you graduate so this is your chance to show shat you can do Remember: your supervisor is here to help and guide you, but itis your project. ‘A project requires many factors to gaia «high examination mark. Marks are awarded according to a marking schcine forthe management ofthe project an forthe execution ofthe practical work as well as for the final dissertation Your project will be assessed on a range of criteria to obtain an overall mark. Your final mark will thus be @ measure of your overall performance. The criterion which you will be judged includ the following. ‘The ability to work on your own intative. Slavishly following your supervisor's instructions isnot suficient, ‘The ebilty to allocate resource, primarily the use of ime. ‘The ability to obtain information and use it efectvely, Facility with equipment. This might include use of experimental equipment, use of computer sofware, design of equipment, tc, depending on the nature ofthe project. + The ability to convey the results of your work fo other people. This requires a clear writing style forthe final dissertation and alsa an ability to present your ideas orally, both in a formal presentation and ina small informal group (lhe viva vooe examination). Ts thus ‘good indication of your ability in the key transferable sills so highly sought by graduate reeuiters: © organisation ‘The Components of your Project ‘Most aspects of the project are common to all individual and group projects at Stages 3 and 4. You will: do such work as you will agree with Your supervisor. give an oral presentation on your work to date to a group of students and tors pat way through your project. write @ Aissenation deseribing the work of your project. describe your project to two extininars in & viva voce examination In adition, Ifyou are doing 2 four (4) module project in Stage 4 of most MEng courses you wil also write an interim report on one aspect of your early work half way through your project. The main aspects of what is required of wou in each of these components is described in @ Separate page, with exta derailed notes on the dissertation snd a full breakdown of the marking scheme ‘The Timetable ‘You must agree a timetable for the project with your supervisor. He will advise you on what is both sufficient and feasible. ral ‘The Project Plan You must prepare a project plan which you will agtee with your supervisor, This must reflect the amount of work you will do, spread appropriately over the first wo tems. You are expected to spend a total of 300 or 400 haurs on 30 module and 40 module projects respectively (he Degree Programme Handbook tells you how this is made up, but remember that thee willbe times when you will need to concentrate on ‘ther work (assignments, etc), so ensure thar your plan allows for exira effore when time is available, Note thet you have a light examination Toad in Semester 1, s0 make the most ofthe examination period when you are free of lectures et: ‘The plan should be presented as a bar chart, with the length of each bar representing the duration of a task and its positon representing its relationship to the other task. Ensure that sufficient time is allocated to each tatk, particularly When work is required from the workshops, ee (Gf nocessary, consult the Chief Technician, Mr S Smith). Superimposed on the bars should be milestones, xed dates by which significant ‘events should have occurred. These ate used to judge whether or not the work is going to plan, so that i things do stat to slip you can see the problem at an early stage while itis stil possible to amend the plan ard bring the work back on course, ‘The attached project plan may be taken as an example. Notice that the order in which work is done is not necessarily ideal, but may be influenced by outside constrains. In the example it would have been preferable to read up on the theory fst as that could affect the design of the test rig. But if the design had not been done at the bepinning then the workshop would not have been able to start constriction until December and the whole project would have been put back by a month and would nat have been completed by Easter, The stent woul also have been left with no work to do while the rig was being constructed. Tis isthe typeof ressoning you must use when planing your project, ‘A g00d way to go about laying out a frst draft plan Isto start atthe deadline for completion. Put in tasks in reverse order, looking all the tne for tems that can be worked on in parallel and try to leave a litle lat (spare time) atthe end. If you arrive at the start with time to spare, spread things out, If you find you should have started before the start of term, look for ways of making sequential tasks partially overlap, or reduce the objectives to make the project feasible. Remember, you have to follow the plan, so make it real PROJECT TIMETABLE, You should sgree with your supervisor atthe start of the fist semester how you will istibute the effort you wll put int the projet [Remember thatthe project is your equivalent to three or four modules (depending on your degree programme), so you ae expected to spend a Toc of time anit, Allprojects ‘Term 1, week I: Visit your proect supervisor to discuss te work you will do. Start the project, ‘Term 1, week 2: Give your proposed project plan and objectives to your supervisor. Agree any changes needed, ‘Term I, week 3: Give your final proect plan and objectives to your supervisor ‘Term 2, weeks 1/2 (Semester | examination period): Oral presentation of yout work to date and proposed work to completion ‘Term 2, week 10: Give the drat of your dissertation to your supervisor for comments. : “Term 2, week 11: Discuss with your supervisor any suggestion he may have for modifications tothe daft ‘+ Easter vacation: Complete your disseration, ‘+ Term 3, week 1: Hand in a least two copies of your dissertation for binding. Each project is equivalent to either thee or four modules and hence merits bout 15 or 20 hours work respectively each week, averaged over two semesters, Less effort thet this is unlikely to enable you to do the job properly, but substantislly more effort on its ovrn will nat automatically guarantee a high mark unless qualified by the olhee factors below. ‘You will not be abieto do al the wor required during the nineto-ive working day. You must expect toda substantial work in your Commitments for other courses (e.. assignments, i-course-assesements) may lead to occasional disruptions in the progress of the project, but these should be only temporary and any extended breaks in the work must be discussed with your Supervisor. Good {oowvard planning is essential especially whete there are likely tobe waiting peciods forthe delivery of components, construction work in the workshop ete.
