EXCEL PROCESS – AHP

1. Enter acronyms for each car alternative in the Primary Matrix. The
Template includes example values taken from a class in an earlier
semester.

2. Enter Original Alternative Comparisons for the 1st Car for the 1st
Criterion in the Sheet for the Primary Matrix. Note that you will
overwrite the existing example values on the Template. Also note
that reciprocal Comparisons are automatically determined. The
Primary values you enter should be your best reading of the case.

3. Enter the remaining Original Alternative Comparison for the 2nd Car.
Note that the Original Alternative Comparison Table is automatically
complete. Note also that the Adjusted Comparison Table for the 1st
Criterion is complete.

4. Enter the Original Alternative Comparisons for the 1st Car for the 2nd
Criterion.

5. Complete the Original Alternative Comparison and Adjusted

Alternative Comparison Tables (automatically done) for the 2nd
Criterion.

6. Enter the Original Criterion Comparison Matrix. Note that the

Adjusted Criterion Comparison Table is automatically calculated.
The Final Alternative Weight Table and Degrees of Preference are
also automatically calculated. Finally, Consistency Ratios (CRs) for
the Primary Sheet are automatically determined.

7. Fix any Unacceptable Inconsistency in the Alternative Matrices by

changing your Original Alternative Comparisons. A good example is
fixing the Inconsistency in the Primary Quality Matrix). Please
reason through the changes rather than using trial and error.
Consult the webCT Discussion Board for help on Inconsistency.

8. Enter changed Comparisons in the Secondary Matrix. You only need

one set of Secondary Values since the Sensitivity Chart is Linear.
Secondary Criterion values should contrast with Primary Values. For
example, the Template’s Secondary exactly reverses the Primary’s
preference for Cost over Quality. Please note that the Secondary
Matrix ONLY changes Criterion Comparisons.

9. The Sensitivity Data and Sensitivity Chart Sheets are automatically

calculated. Eyeball the Value of the Indifference Point from the

1
Chart. For example, the value for the Template example is at the
intersection of the VW and JAG lines and is approximately 0.50.
Consult the webCT Discussion Board for help on Sensitivity.
