Example Problem
A
WOMAN
DIES
WHO, she leaves behind
•A Husband
•A son
•3 Daughters
WHAT, she leaves behind

• £224,000

1/8 + 1/7 of her money

goes to a stranger
STEP 1
• First of all, the stranger should
get his share.
• This is 1/7 + 1/8 which is=
15/56.
• This leaves 41/56 for the rest of
the family.
Remainder for
Family
STEP 2
• Now the husband gets
¼ of what is left

• So ¼ of 41/56 = 41/224.
STEP 3
• Now the son and 3 daughters get their
shares.
• The sons always get double what the
daughters get.
• The son and the 3 daughters receive their
shares in the ratio 2:1:1:1
• Son receives 2/5 after Husband and
Stranger have been given their share
• Each daughter receives 1/5 (one fifth).
