Our class is continuing to investigate the concepts of addition and subtraction through a
mathematics unit of inquiry on number strategy.

Central idea: Numbers are related to each other and are used to solve problems using
different strategies.
Lines of inquiry:

Ô he use of addition and subtraction in our daily lives

Ô nowing when to use addition or subtraction
Ô Jifferent strategies we can use to solve problems

he children will deepen their conceptual understanding into:

Ô the operations of addition and subtraction and how they are related to each other
Ô how addition and subtraction operations and strategies are used to solve problems.
Ô number operations as modelled in a variety of ways.
Ô many mental methods that can be applied for exact and appropriate computations.

Students are at different stages of development in terms of acquiring the concepts.

herefore, instruction is differentiated to students according to their level. Learning
engagements are planned according to each level in order to help children move forward on
the learning continuum.

Some suggestions on how you help out at home:

Ô play board games and get lots of practice counting on and counting back. Junior
Monopoly is great for addition and subtraction.
Ô games with two dice are great too so they have to add the two numbers together.
Ô talk about how you use addition and subtraction when shopping, paying a taxi,
buying a ticket for the BS etc.
Ô use real life situations where addition or subtraction strategies are applied to solve
a problem. Eg. 1. You invited 12 children to your birthday but 3 can·t come.
How many goodie bags do we need to make?
Ô compare two sets of materials. Which set has more? How do you know it has more?
Can you add them together and count how many you have? Can you take one
away from another? What strategy did you use?
