Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Why Report?
Your vacation employment experience is an integral part of your curriculum and the learning outcomes will
be monitored and evaluated, just as are other components of your learning. It is critical that you are able to
track the contributions your work placement (vacation employment) experiences are able to make to the
delivery of the graduate outcomes designated for the academic program as a whole.
Vacation employment is often packaged as an academic unit, or subject in its own right and will typically
have reporting requirements for both you as a student and the employer. This `subject’ must be satisfactorily
completed and professional reporting of your vacation employment experience is essential.
A copy of your work experience report can also be provided with job applications to prospective employers
and provide you with a competitive edge in the job market.
What to Report On
Your vacation experience coordinator should provide you with specific reporting requirements such as
whether you are required to keep a daily journal, or write a formal report at the end of the industry
placement.
Ideally, such a report should outline the tasks or projects you were involved in, the contribution and
responsibility you had, any problems you faced and the links you feel were apparent with your engineering
studies. This should include a self-analysis and evaluation of how you see the specific work episodes or
experiences contributed to the development of your capabilities and especially to the designated graduate
outcomes specified for your degree program.

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Q. My company has asked me to achieve Chartered status. What does this mean?
In demonstrating these qualities, engineers must produce written reports on a collection of projects they’ve
completed and undergo a professional interview with an industry panel.
In addition, a benefit of Chartered Status comes from the linkage to registration, which is becoming more
important to governments and consumers of engineering services. Having met the requirements of
Engineers Australia, chartered practitioners automatically qualify to be registered on either the National
Professional Engineers Register or the National Engineering Technologists Register.
A. The personal and professional development of engineers is critical to delivering projects and sustainment
on time, on budget and to the required quality, capability and safety.
The technical regulatory environment means companies need to have engineers with Chartered Status –
where the engineering decisions made are backed up by recognised competency.
Companies send a clear signal to industry and Government of their intent to continue to grow their
internal engineering, project and program management expertise.
A. You can apply for Chartered Status after you have gained a minimum of three years of engineering
experience.
Q. I’ve registered on the Professional Development Program. How do I begin my application for
Chartered Status?
A. The first thing to do is to read your copy of the Chartered Status Handbook available from the web:
The handbook provides information on the process for assessment, report writing and application
submission. If your company runs an endorsed PDP, the company will host an information session on the
program and getting started, so make sure you ask to be enrolled in a PDP.

Starting Salaries
Graduate Careers Australia identified engineering as “one of the top ten ranked sectors in terms of starting
salaries in Australia.”
The average base starting salary for an engineer with a bachelor’s (4-6 year) degree ranges from $51,400
to $78,000 - significantly higher than graduates with degrees in many other fields. As a result of growing skill
shortages across many fields of engineering are generating higher graduate salaries and other benefits for
engineering students. Female and male engineering graduates started out on the same salary levels.
The table below lists the average starting salaries for different engineering disciplines.

Marketing You!
You resume is your personal marketing tool. You should think about ways of enhancing the layout and
appearance of this document. Don’t make the mistake of copying your details into a template or familiar
format. Be creative and take some time to single out your unique qualities and experiences that will help you
stand out from the crowd.
Remember that employers are inundated with applications for a position so you need to put on your
marketing hat and use some common marketing techniques to help you be shortlisted.
What is your career goal?
What type of job are you looking for?
What experience do you have that is relevant to this position?
Do you have the relevant qualification and education?
Who are your target employers?
Make a list of the companies you would like to work for and the type of occupations you are interested in
applying for. Remember that your resume must be designed with your target audience in mind (i.e.
employers) so if you are applying for a technical job you must be conservative and informative in your tone
to successfully articulate your expertise.
Now that you know what your goals are, your qualities and who you’re targeting you can develop the rest of
your marketing plan including a cover letter, resume and a two-minute pitch on why you feel you are the
perfect candidate for a particular job.
Résumé or CV?
Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)? What are the main differences? These terms are generally
interchangeable but in many countries the term CV refers to a more detailed resume which includes more
information on work experience, community involvement, further education and achievements.
If you are applying for employment overseas it may be appropriate to apply with a CV. If you are unsure,
double-check with your prospective employer and the exact type of information they require.
Resume and/or CV’s can come in a range of styles, including chronological, functional and targeted.
Chronological: the information in your resume is presented under a series of key headings (personal details,
work experience, education, achievements etc). It is always important to include date and use these to place
all information in order, with the most recent listed first.
Functional: this type of information focuses on skills and capabilities rather than history. The same
categories as a chronological resume may be used but the information will be set out differently. For
example, work experience would be organised into categories (e.g. design, project management,
management) rather than into date order.
Targeted: is similar to a function resume where the information is focused on skills and capabilities but this
type of resume is targeted towards a particular job. This type of resume would be used to demonstrate how
you can meet the requirements outlined in the position description and information would be grouped
according to your skills and qualities relevant to the position you are applying for.
14
Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Resume Content
The following list can be the starting point for a new resume or a checklist to help you evaluate your existing
resume.
Part 1-
Personal Details
List your name and contact details, including your postal address and telephone contact numbers, as well
as an email address.
Career Objective:
If you do include an objective, expect to rewrite it or change it slightly to match each job you apply for.
Part 2
Education Qualifications:
List the name of the degree, the Institution and the year completed. After you have completed your degree,
you do not need to include details of your high school education.
Professional Experience:
Keep these brief and informative, but as a general rule include the most detail about your current job. Don’t
forget to include part-time student work and vacation employment. List in chronological order, with the most
recent job listed first.
Include the following:
Company & Title
Job Summary- include duties & responsibilities, emphasise your achievements in relation to
business goals.
Part 3
Additional Information:
You may want to list names and contact details of referees, or advise that they are available upon request.
Other items may include professional training, professional affiliations & memberships, licenses and
accreditations, knowledge of foreign languages, publications, special accomplishments /awards and
interests.
It is also a good idea to include any volunteer work in a resume. This will help capture the employer’s
attention as it shows them that you are an involved member of society and that you are committed to
making the community a safer and better place to live.
For those about to graduate, you may not have a job history to include, so highlight your personal skills &
attributes. If education is your strongest asset, list it first, paying attention to the courses that are relevant to
the position.
If your part-time work was not related to the position you are aiming for describe the skills and attributes you
gained in doing it rather than just your duties, e.g. Hospitality develops customer services skills, time
management skills as well as working under pressure and with a team.
15
Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Résumé Tips
Use dot points. They will improve readability and assist you to be brief and concise
Check for spelling and grammatical errors. It might be a good idea to have someone else check over
it for you, preferably someone in the industry
Be honest, statements in resumes will be checked up in either the interview or with referees
Don’t forget to include out of work interests and hobbies as well as any professional associations or
membership organisations you belong to. Potential employers like to get an idea of the “whole” person
they are going to meet
The purpose of your resume is to entice the reader to call and find out more about you and what you
have to offer the company. It’s not intended to actually get you the job, that’s for the interview
If emailing your resume use a common program such as Microsoft Word. If it can’t be opened easily it
probably won’t get read.

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
There are many advantages of using and/or sending your application on-line – the main ones being that
you are targeting employers directly - you are being given hints of what they are after, the low cost involved
and the speed at which you can apply to numerous positions. Over 70% of HR professionals are using the
internet as a recruitment tool.
Take your time - only fill in applications when you have time - don’t try and rush them - that’s when you
will make mistakes and risk your chances.
Design your resume - already have your resume prepared and “copy” information from that. Sometimes
you are asked to include your resume as well - ensure consistency between the 2 documents if this is the
case.
Be professional in language use - this is still a business interaction - don’t slip into e-mail lingo! And use
correct “lettering”.
Research the employer - use various methods to do your research and where applicable show this
knowledge in your application.
Be sure to use similar language to the advert, in the form or from the companies website - many
companies and recruitment agencies are using on-line application filters that look for key words and if they
are not there you get a “thanks, but no thanks letter” before a “human” has even seen your application!
Formatting - you are limited in what you can use - make use of capitals, asterisks and dashes. Try and
avoid columns and often dot points and shorter sentences are better than long paragraphs.
Check the document looks okay - if possible before hitting the send key send it to “friends” (or yourself) to
ensure that the text transfers.
Save a copy for following up - remember which jobs you have applied for - either print of a copy or keep a
job application log, to ensure you do not double up!
Read over before sending - just like with a hard copy read over before you send - if you can get a fresh
set of eyes all the better!

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
1. Arrangements
Confirm the date, time and location of the interview; plan to get there early. Try and find out the name of the
people you will meet and the expected length of the interview.
There are a number of sources of information available about companies and industries. Try their Internet
site, annual reports and other library resources. Use the information you have gathered during the
recruitment process.
Know what skills you have to offer an employer. Be ready to give examples of how you’ve demonstrated
these skills, rather than a yes/no answer. Be able to identify what the situation was, what you did, what the
outcome was. If you don’t have much professional work experience, think of examples from your major
university projects or social activities.
Take evidence of your work and education with you. Invest in a display book, don’t just have samples /
documents loose or in an envelope- these documents are a reflection of you and are too precious to lose.
You may wish to make copies of the more important ones to be left with the interviewer.
Have answers ready for common questions (refer below) and take out a book from the library of commonly
asked interview questions.
5. Appearance
Remember first impressions count, your attire for an interview should be professional, tidy and leaning
towards conservative. Avoid extremes of fashion. Clean your shoes. Don’t go overboard with aftershave,
perfume or makeup.
It is very important to have a professional and friendly message on your telephone as this will be the first
thing a prospective employer will hear if you are unable to answer their call. Also, ensure you have a
professional email address as your email address also sends a message to the employer.
7. Finally
Smile. Shake hands firmly. Be enthusiastic. Be polite to everyone you have contact with at the organisation.
Be punctual. Do not smoke or accept refreshments even if offered, nothing is worse than trying to answer a
question with your mouth full!! Thank the interviewer for their time. If you are interested in the position,
restate your interest and ask about the next step. Make a follow up call if you have not heard from them in
the timeframe discussed during the interview.

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Q. Why do you wish to work for our organisation? Or what interests you about our products/
services?
A. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the company and the work it is doing.
Q. What sort of person do you like to be supervised by? Or what style of management gets the
best from you?
A. Focus on positive attributes such as competent, supportive, forward thinking. Do not mention, unless
asked, attributes you don’t like.
Q. Tell me about a group project on which you’ve worked? How did you allocate responsibilities?
A. This type of question is seeking details about your team skills and leadership ability. If you don’t have
a lot of work experience use group projects from university.

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Referees
There is much debate as to weather to include the names and contact details of referees in a resume or to
state “available on request” - regardless on what you do the following are important considerations:
Who to choose - ideally past supervisors/managers, lecturers or tutors, persons worked with on
community projects.
Who not to choose - family members, best friends, people you haven’t asked to be referees for you.
How many - will depend on the stage of your career - initially 3 should be fine. Then as you progress
in your career you will build up a pool of 6 or so to use most appropriately.
Ask permission - you must ask someone if there are willing to provide you with a reference, just
because you worked for them does not guarantee that they will do it - or that they are the best person
to do it. If in doubt ask - most people will be honest with you.
Give your referee a copy of resume - it’s a good reminder for them.
Keep in touch - now that you have asked these people to be referees for you - keep in touch - let them
know how your job hunt is going - what interviews you’ve been for - and when they may expect calls
about you.

Engineering Employment Handbook 2009
Many employers looking to recruit graduates will begin their recruitment process in the first term of each
year. Start early and visit the Careers Centre at your University or TAFE, register on as many jobs
databases as possible and check newspapers and the internet on a regular basis.
Newspapers
There are many resources available to you in gaining employment after you have graduated. Traditionally,
employers advertise their job vacancies in leading newspapers. In Melbourne, The Age’s “My Career” guide
in Saturday’s paper is an excellent starting point.
Gradlink
www.gradlink.edu.au
A website provided by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA), which also has a section on
Graduate Opportunities at www.graduateopportunities.com.
Jobs Guide
http://jobguide.thegoodguides.com.au/ A federal Government site that looks at specific occupations and
general careers information.
Networking
“It’s not what you know, but who you know”. You’ve heard it many times but often, job opportunities arise
from talking to people in the industry. Engineers Australia has a Young Engineers group that organise
various events, and the Victoria Division runs many events where you can meet people working in the
industry that can provide invaluable career advice.
For further information on any of these topics or for any career related questions please

Engineering Disciplines
One of the great attractions of engineering work for many people is the huge variety of tasks and
environments open to engineers. Historically, mainstream engineering is divided into the four broad disciplines
of chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.
Within each discipline there are several branches of engineering covering an enormous range of fields.
Today, we are seeing the emergence of new disciplines of engineering. Here is a description of some of the
major fields of engineering.
Aerospace Engineering
Building services engineers are involved with designing heating, air-conditioning, electric lighting and power,
water and gas supply, plumbing and drainage systems. Fire safety and security systems, phones, faxes,
intercoms, computers, lifts and escalators are all needed for a functional and safe work environment.
Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering is concerned with the ways in which raw materials are changed
into useful and commercial end products. Research of raw materials and their
properties, design and development of equipment and the evaluation of operating
processes are all part of chemical engineering. These skills are combined
244
Engineering Disciplines
to extract raw materials which can then be refined and manufactured to produce food, petrol, plastics, paints,
paper, ceramics, minerals and metals. Chemical engineers are also involved in the production of
pharmaceutical products as diverse as penicillin and shampoo.
Many chemical engineers also find employment in environment protection and the reclamation or clean up of
contaminated sites, or in research laboratories, chemical plants and petroleum refineries. Other major
employers of chemical engineers include manufacturers of basic iron and steel products, organic industrial
chemicals and the mining industry. Extracting raw materials without harming the environment is a major area
of work for chemical engineers.
Biochemical Engineering - biochemical engineers study the chemical reactions and processes that occur
naturally in living systems (plants and animals) so that these processes can be copied and used for human
benefit.
Food Engineering - food engineers design equipment, machinery and production methods that increase the
life of food whilst maintaining its quality and nutritional value. They also ensure that the food produced is free
from bacteria and disease and does not lose its original texture and colour.
Petroleum & Petrochemical Engineering - engineers in this field find, produce, use and improve oil and
natural gas based on geological study. Raw materials extracted from the earth or oceans are turned into
synthetic fibres, dyes, detergents and many forms of plastics materials and products.
Pharmaceutical - equipment that produces life-saving drugs and medicine is designed and operated by
pharmaceutical engineers. These drugs need to be made very precisely in both small and large quantities.
Engineering teams work closely with medical research teams to achieve the most effective results.
Process Control - is concerned with the creation and maintenance of computer software and systems
designed to control the quantity and quality of a particular product when it is being manufactured.
Production - production engineers are responsible for the equipment and processes used in chemical or
manufacturing plants. Production engineers ensure equipment is maintained and operating at a peak level
and may also be involved in advising on factory floor layout to maximise production levels.
Civil Engineering
Civil engineers are concerned with all types of structures including dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers
and buildings. They are responsible for the design and construction of transport systems, the design and
management of gas and water supply, sewerage systems, harbours, airports and railways. Civil engineers
also plan, design and test the structures of private and public buildings and facilities. A civil engineer will work
from an architect's drawings and consider whether the chosen materials for a particular building will be strong
enough to hold a structure of that height or design. It is the responsibility of the civil engineer to produce safe,
economical and environmentally sound structures.
They are also involved in environmental areas such as the assessment of the impact large scale projects
have on the environment and the collection and treatment of sewage and industrial wastes, pollution control,
environmental control and resource protection and management.
Geotechnical Engineering - these engineers provide information and knowledge on how the soil and rocks
beneath a proposed structure will behave under pressure. An understanding of the structures being built is
needed in order to assist in the design of their foundations. Geotechnical engineers spend a lot of time
outdoors, collecting samples and testing ground areas and advising on work in
progress.
Hydraulics (Water) Engineering - is concerned with planning and organising how
water is provided and removed both for large and local schemes. Hydraulics engineers
also deal with the treatment of waste from industry, the control of rivers and flood
waters, the protection of the coastline and careful planning of harbours.
Structural Engineering - natural forces such as wind, waves and earthquakes and their effects all need to be
taken into account when a structure is designed and built. Certain stresses caused by the modern
environment, such as the traffic of both cars and people, also need to be considered. A
structural engineer ensures that structures are built in such a way that they stand up to
these forces. Innovative solutions to these problems are researched, developed and
tested by structural engineers.
Transport Engineering - is concerned with the transport means for both people and
freight. Transport engineers design, test and improve systems and structures used to

move people, cars, trains, airplanes and ships. Transport engineers also plan future travel needs of city and
country areas as populations increase and needs change.
Coastal and Ocean Engineering - coastal and ocean engineers work at the interface between the land and
the sea and in the open ocean environment and are skilled in understanding this dynamic natural
environment. This provides the specialised knowledge needed to ensure safe and ecologically sustainable
development of near shore zones, vital ports and harbours and valuable offshore resources.
Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineering encompasses electronic, computer systems, telecommunications, control and electrical
power engineering. Electrical engineers design and build the systems and machines that generate, transmit,
measure, control and use electrical energy essential to modern life.
Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering - electronics engineering deals with devices and systems
that use small amounts of electrical energy to analyse, transmit and store information. Transmission of these
electronic signals forms the basis of communications and the information technology industry, and includes
the field of microelectronics and the use of silicon chip technology. Electronics engineering is a very diverse
field and it is currently undergoing expansion as new applications are found for electronic equipment. This has
led to the development of two relatively new fields of engineering - software engineering and mechatronics.
Software engineers - design and modify complex software systems and computer hardware.
Mechatronics - combines the disciplines of mechanical and electrical engineering. It is associated with the
use of digital computers to control machines and processes. It is also used to create diverse products such as
substitutes for human sensors and organs and computer controlled machine tools.
Computer Systems Engineering - is based on electrical engineering and computer science. These days
computers are used to operate many of the things we use in everyday life, for example cars, telephone
systems, trains, TV and radio stations. Computer engineers are involved in the analysis, design, development
and operation of computer hardware and software.
Control Engineering - is involved with the use of electrical signals to move and operate equipment and
machinery. Control engineers design, test and improve automatic control systems for large industries such as
oil refineries, mining operations and production plants. The safe flow of road and air traffic is also the
responsibility of the control engineer.
Power Generation & Distribution Engineering - provides electricity to our homes and to
industry. It is concerned with planning, developing, testing, installing, using and maintaining
power plants or stations that provide electric power. It also deals with the transmission of that
power to where it is needed. Power engineers also conduct research on developing
alternative power sources such as solar and wind energy.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineers are concerned with protecting the environment by assessing the impact a project
has on the air, water, soil and noise levels in its vicinity. This is done by studying the project's design,
construction and operation and minimising any adverse effects that it may have on the environment.
Environmental engineers are also involved in removing problems caused by past activity, such as cleaning
contaminated industrial land so it can be used for housing.
Environmental engineers predict what problems may be caused by accidents, such as oil spills for example,
and assess what may cause problems for the environment in the long term. They also plan and design
equipment and processes for the treatment and safe disposal of waste material and direct the conservation
and wise use of natural resources. They are involved in research and development of alternative energy
sources, water reclamation, waste treatment and recycling.
Industrial Engineering
Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of
human resources, materials, equipment and finance. It draws upon specialised knowledge and skill in the
mathematical, physical, physiological and social sciences together with the principles and methods of
engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems
and measure achievement.

Engineering Disciplines
Marine Engineering
Marine engineers are involved in designing, testing, and improving machinery and equipment used at sea.
This machinery may include propulsion machinery, electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, cargo handling
and domestic services equipment. It is their responsibility to check that it is all functioning effectively and
being properly maintained. A marine engineer needs to have a good understanding of the way in which all
these systems operate. Marine engineers may also work with organic pumping or mooring systems, pipelines,
dockyards, port and harbour operations, equipment for offshore oil rigs and platforms.
Materials Engineering
Materials engineers test the ways certain materials behave when put under
pressure or are heated or joined with other materials (metals, plastics, rubber,
timber, ceramics). Materials engineers are involved with developing new materials
and improving certain qualities of existing materials. They may also be involved with
developing new and improved ways of recycling plastics and paper.
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
Mechanical and manufacturing engineering turns energy into power and motion.
Mechanical engineers design, create and improve systems and machinery that is
used for domestic, public and industrial purposes. This area covers the design
and manufacture of a great variety of products such as domestic appliances,
industrial machinery, ships, aircraft, engines, pumps, compressors and turbines
or complex systems such as the air-conditioning and ventilation systems of
buildings. The mechanical area interlinks closely with other areas of engineering
and applies knowledge of materials, energy and structures.
Manufacturing systems engineering - is concerned with the processes and systems that are used in
industry. Systems and equipment that complete tasks accurately and change raw materials into products with
the smallest wastage of time, materials and energy are designed and improved by manufacturing systems
engineers.
Hydraulics - is involved with the design of new and improved ways of applying fluid control, so that machinery
can operate smoothly and effectively with the least amount of pressure. For example, hydraulic oil pressure is
used to move large cranes.
Pneumatics - covers the use of air pressure to control machinery. For many industries, air is a much safer
material to use because it is clean and can be used safely in flammable areas. It is practical to use
pneumatics in food processing as it is much cleaner. It is also used for safety reasons in machines that
process flammable substances such as petrol and paint.
Thermodynamics - deals with heat energy transfer and machinery that turns heat energy into mechanical
power. Engineers in this field design, manage and improve machinery such as boilers and gas and steam
turbine generators, and facilities like cooling towers, and heating or refrigerant systems.
Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering
This form of engineering is concerned with turning raw material of low value into valuable products, for
example bauxite into aluminum. Minerals Engineers use a wide range of treatments to process materials in
the most efficient way. This might involve physical or chemical separations and hydro or pyro-metallurgical
processes. Metallurgical Engineering takes this one step further by combining metals and non-metals to make
new composite materials. These new composites are designed to be light, strong, durable and heat resistant
materials for use in the design and performance of cars, boats, jets, spacecraft and other vehicles.
Mining Engineering
Mining engineers work together with geologists to investigate and carry out the
extraction of ore bodies and mineral deposits, as well as the extraction of non-
metallic ores and fuels such as coal and uranium. They are responsible for planning
the safest and most cost effective way of removing minerals from the ground, rivers
or the sea bed. They may be involved with designing, installing and supervising the
use of mining machinery and equipment and for inspecting the progress of mining
operations. Computerised techniques are often used in the development and

operation of mines. Mining engineers are responsible for protecting conditions for both people and the
environment in the vicinity of mines. Mining engineers work on mining sites and in head offices of mining
companies.
Resource Engineering
Resource engineering is concerned with the development and efficient use of natural resources and the
management of the environment in rural areas. This includes the development, conservation and control of
water resources, soil conservation and the recovery of degraded land, catchment and land management, and
the assessment and control of water pollution from agricultural and mining industries.
Risk Engineering
There is a growing awareness in the general public of the need for risk assessments to be carried out before a
project begins. This involves analyses based on knowledge of chemistry, physics and operational aspects of
any given project. It is important to identify any potential hazards, the consequences of these hazards and the
frequency and magnitude with which they are likely to occur. These hazards need to be managed and
emergency response procedures identified. Risk consultants often carry out detailed risk assessment studies
for private companies or review studies done by other parties.
