Grade 10 Fall Final Review

What to know?
 Literary Elements
You need to know the basic conflict, characters,
and motivation of all the works from his semester’s
reading selection. (the bulk of this will be about
TKAM)

Here are the short stories you are responsible for along with some specific points that will
be covered on the final:

 The Destructors- I’m Your Horse- motivation- characterization A Work of Art – Araby-
theme- mood- Cask- theme

 Literary devices
See the review sheet that you have already completed in class. If you were unable to
identify any of these, please ask for clarification during the review.

 Written Response – This is what it looks like. You are encouraged to do the following:
 Choose A (Loyalty) or B (Dynamic)
 Take notes about this character- develop your pre-writing
 Write a thesis
 Create an outline
***We will do much of this during our designated review day. You are allowed to bring
your pre-writing to the exam.

Part A 40%:
A) From Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, which character most displays the quality of loyalty?
400 words.

B) Which character from TKAM is the most dynamic?

***Remember, characterization includes the following: (so when preparing your pre-writing,
be sure to include examples that cover all of these)
What they do.
What they say.
What others say about them.
How they react to things and other characters.

Part B
Annotation (This is when you “break down” and “pick apart” a passage through analysis.
Annotate the following passage from Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.
*** When we analyze an extract we are looking at two fundamental elements of literature;
content and style- what the author is trying to say and how he/she says it.
Answer the following guiding questions:

- What themes and concepts is the author attempting to convey in the extract?
- What major sort of structure; literary devices, and language choice, does Lee use to
convey her viewpoints?
- What lesson might be taken from the passage?

Use highlighters, colored pencils to identify the following:


- characterization - CONTENT
- word choice - STYLE
- foreshadowing
- literary devices STYLE
- figurative language STYLE
- make connections to other characters CONTENT
- ask questions
