PHRASE STRUCTURE

• The grammatical arrangement of words in


sentences

• Phrase Structure Rule is a way to describe a


given language’s syntax
PHRASE STRUCTURE RULE
• A sentence can be divided into 2 categories:
1. PHRASAL CATEGORY
2. LEXICAL CATEGORY

Phrasal categories
(Noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase)

Lexical categories
(Part of speech)

NOUN PHRASE

• A noun phrase (NP) is a phrase whose


head in a NOUN or a PRONOUN,
optionally accompanied by a modifier set.

• Noun phrase could stand with only one


word (single noun). Also, could consist of
determiner, adjective and noun.

• RAFIQ read the book. (SINGLE NOUN)

• THE BOY read the book. (DET,NOUN)

• THE NERD BOY read the book. (DET,ADJ,NOUN)


VERB PHRASE
• A verb phrase provides information about the
subject of the sentence.

• In linguistics, a (VP) is a syntactic structure


composed of the predicative elements of a
sentence and its function is to provide
information about the subject of the sentence.
• Verb phrase started with a VERB.
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

• At the minimum, a prepositional phrase will


begin with a preposition and end with
a noun,pronoun, gerund, or clause, the
"object" of the preposition.

• An adverbial phrase (AdvP) is a linguistic term for a


group of two or more words operating adverbially.
• Example – very carefully (AdvP)

ADJECTIVE PHRASE

• An adjectival phrase or adjective phrase is a


group of words in a sentence that functions in
the same way a lone adjective would.
- the (very delicate) orchid (NP)
