Examiner: Dr. Khalil Abd_elsalam Time: 90 min
.
1.
A) Derive the total thermal resistance formula, and conduction heat transfer rate, for a composite simple
slab (three layers), A, B, and C, its thermal conductivities are KA, KB, and KC, and its thicknesses LA, LB,
and LC, assuming one-dimensional steady state heat conduction without heat generation. (3Degrees)
B) Find-out the heat transfer through the composite
Wall given below per unit area, assume one dimensional heat flow.
Area A=Area D=1m2
Area B= Area C=0.5m2
KA=15 w/m °c , KB=3 w/m °c
KC=6.5 w/m °c, KD=5 w/m °c (5Degrees)
2.
a) Derive the temperature distribution across simple slab, assuming one-dimensional steady state heat
conduction with, and without heat generation. (3Degrees)
b) Air flows through a long rectangular heating duct that is 0.75 m wide and 0.3 m height maintains
the outer duct surface at 45 o C. The duct is insinuated and exposed to air at 15 o C in the crawlspace
beneath a home, what is the heat loss from the duct per meter of length? (5Degrees)
3.
The local atmospheric pressure in Santa Catherine (elevation 1000 m) is 83.4 Kpa. Air at this pressure
and 20 o C flows with a velocity 8 m/s over (1.5*6 m) flat plate whose temperature 134 o C. Determine
the rate of heat transfer from the plate if the air flows parallel to: A) 6-m long side B) the 1.5-m long
side. (8Degrees)
4.
A large block steel (k = 45w/m. k, α = 1.4*10-5 m2/ s) is initially at a uniform temperature of
32 oC. The surface is exposed to a heat flux by by raising the surface temperature to 250 oC.
Calculate the temperature at a depth of 2.5 cm after a time of 0.5 min for both cases. (8Degrees)
5.
Find the temperatures, T1, T2, T3, and T4, in the Figure shown, using numerical method. Assume two-
dimensional steady state heat conduction. First case: without heat generation. Second case with heat
generation experiences a 100000 w/m3, assuming boundary conditions of the walls, illustrated as shown.
