Project # 1 – Mat Foundations

For the foundation plan of a residential building shown on the next page. Design a mat
foundation as indicated in Figure 1 below. Columns A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L are 50
cm x 50 cm and columns M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T and U are 50 cm x 60 cm in the directions
shown. The column allowable loads are as shown on the plan. The footing is placed at 3.5
meters below the surface.

The soil properties are as follows: No water table is present

3
c = 25 kPa, φ = 10°, bulk unit weight γ = 16 kN/m .
Es = 23 MPa and µ = 0.3.
Assumed qa = 100 kPa.

Your design must include the following:

a) Finding the least required dimensions that are safe for bearing capacity failure with F = 3.0.
b) Plotting the shear and bending moment diagrams for all footings.
c) Design the reinforcement for footings. Use fc' = 24 MPa and fy = 275 MPa.
d) Draw final design sketches neatly and to scale.

Note: Make any reasonable assumptions but indicate them.
