CE5510 Advanced Structural Concrete Design

Session 2010/2011, Semester I


Term Paper

Choose one of the following topics and submit a 20- to 30-page report as part of the
course requirements. You may work individually or in groups of up to 3 students.
Remember to write your name(s) and matriculation number(s) on the front cover
of your report.

(1) Construct the design N-M or Mx-My interaction diagrams for a hollow section,
L-section or U-section, using the method of strain compatibility and equilibrium;
and verify the results with appropriate information. State the concrete class for
which the design charts are applicable.

(2) Discuss in general the techniques related to materials, design and construction
that may be used to control deflections and cracking in structural concrete
members. Choose a particular method (e.g. crack control using discrete fibers)
and explain analytically how the method works.

(3) Consider any one structural concrete member, preferably one that you have
designed in practice (e.g., a transfer girder, a stepped beam). Design the
member using the strut-and-tie method and compare the results with those
that you had obtained by other means such as empirical methods or computer
software.

(4) Discuss the use of yield line method and/or strip method in the design of steel
fibre reinforced concrete slabs (without conventional steel bars) on piles, and
illustrate with an example.

(5) Explain and illustrate with an example, the use of post-tensioning in flat slabs.

(6) Explore the use and limitations of high-strength slender columns and illustrate
the use with a design example.

(7) Any other topic related to the module that you like to propose. The topic has to
be approved.

(B) Approach to the Problem & Coverage
(C) Organization & Presentation
