Computer application and data analysis

1. Briefly explain the main logic units of a personal

computer.

a. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The central processing unit, or CPU, is the “brain” of the
computer. It is the computer module that handles fetching,
decoding and implementation of program instruction.
The CPU usually has two components:
The arithmetic/logic unit (ALU), performs arithmetic
operations and logic operations.
The control unit, controls the actions of other components.
b. Primary (Main) Memory (RAM)
Are crucial to the operation of a computer because, they
store the programs being executed as well as data being
processed by the programs. They consist of both the RAM
and ROM.
Main memory consists of a long list of numbered locations
called memory locations.
Each memory location contains a string of 0 and 1.
c. Secondary Storage Devices
Secondary storage device holds data permanently.
Examples are hard disks, diskettes, tapes.
Data in secondary storage is kept in units called files.
CD-ROM is a newer form of secondary storage device.
d. Input Devices
Input devices form the “receiving” unit of the computer.
They allow the computer user to send data to the computer.
The most common input device is a keyboard. A mouse, a
microphone, a photo scanner are other input devices.
e. Output Devices
Output devices form the “shipping” section of a computer.
The output devices allow the computer to communicate
information to its user.
They include; video display screen (monitor), speakers and
printers.
2. Briefly explain the term response matrix and its usage in the
analysis of measurement.
