The Environmental Awareness Club (EAC) of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan

Syed Putra was formed two years ago. The purpose of this club is to enlighten the
students of this school about environmental issues and to promote environmental
awareness among students. This club started out with only eight members in 2005 and
membership has now exceeded 30.

The EAC carried out various projects throughout the year. In February, we
embarked on a project to beautify the school’s compound. We carried out a landscaping
project at the entrance of the school. For this project, all the members of the club
contributed plants and we were able to secure some donations from the nearby nurseries.
The result is, as we all have noticed, a beautiful landscape complete with a rock garden.

We also launched a recycling campaign in March this year, where we encouraged

the classes to collect as many recyclable items as they could. Form Four Biru received the
trophy for the highest contribution. Due to the success of the campaign, we held similar
campaigns in June and September.

In July, The Club organized a trip to nearby recycling factory where we witnessed
the process of recycling items such as paper and aluminium tins.

We also received approval from our principal to designate the first week of
September as Green Week. During this week, we held an essay writing competition, a
speech contest and a poster designing competition, all aimed at promoting environmental
awareness.

There are many plans in the pipeline for the next year and the club hopes that
many more students will come forwards as members. It is important that environmental
awareness is inculcated in all of us. Efforts to preserve the environment are carried out on
an everyday basis, not just restricted to the activities organized by the club.
