‘Look up into the sky and count the stars, if you can count them’ (Genesis 15:5) He showed
him a sign, how he multiplies them in the world. He showed him One, for in the beginning he
was single in the world, ‘Abraham was one! (Ezek. 33:24) who came first to dwell under the
wings of Sheckinah, Then he showed hin two, relating to Avraham and Yitzhak. Then he showed
hin three, relating to Avraham and Yitzhak and Yaakov. Then he showed him the twelve tribes,
and then seventy, and then he showed him countless number of stars, Showing that Israel will in
the future multiply until they can't be counted. 'And the children of Israel were fruitful, and
ncreased abundantly, and multiplied’ (Shmot 1:7).
Midrash Rabbah - Genesis 46:1
‘And Abram was ninety years old and nine’, etc, (Genesis! 7:1). Its written, 'I found Israel
like grapes in the wilderness, I saw your fathers as the first-ripe in the fig-tree at her first
season’ (Hos. 9:10).
R. Judan said: At first the fruit of a fig-tree is gathered one by one, then two by two, then three
by three, until eventually they are gathered in baskets and with shovels. Even so, at the
beginning, ‘Abraham was one! (Ezek. 33:24); then there were Abraham and Isaac; then
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Until eventually, And the children of Israel were fruitful, and
increased abundantly, and multiplied, ete. (Ex. 1:7).
R. Judan said: Just as @ fig contains nothing inedible save its stalk, and with its removal even this
defect ceases, so did God say to Abraham: “There is nought unworthy in thee save thy foreskin:
remove it and the blemish ceases’: hence, 'Walk before me and be whole’
Midrash Rabbah - Genesis 94:1
It is written, "My dove, my perfect one, is only one’, etc. (S.S. 6:9). This alludes to Abraham,
as it says, ‘Abraham was one! (Ezek. 33:24).
Midrash Rabbah - The Song of Songs 8:10
R. Berekiah interpreted the verse as applying to our father Abraham. "We have a little sister
(ahot)' (Song 8:8) this is Abraham, as it says, ‘Abraham was one (ehad) and he inherited
the land! (Ezek. 33:24). he, as it were, stitched together (#ha) all mankind in the presence of the
Holy One, blessed be He.4 Bar Kappara said: Like a man who stitches up a rent.
