Course: Political Philosophy IB (SL) Teacher: Mr.

Course Description: After a series of readings that address the core IB philosophy
theme of what it means to be human, this course includes the study of people in societies,
in the form of rights and obligations, and their demand for justice, equality and liberty.
Students who take this class must register for and take the IB Philosophy exam. Upon
successful completion, students will have met the Minnesota state high school graduation
standards in Government and Citizenship.

Learner Objectives: Students should


a) demonstrate an understanding of philosophical concepts/terms
b) apply philosophical skills, knowledge and ideas
c) successfully complete IB Philosophy (SL) course work
Part 1: Themes
Core Theme: What is a human being?
Optional Theme: Political Philosophy
Part 2: Prescribed philosophical text
The Republic Books IV-IX
Part 3: Internal Assessment
Students are required to produce a philosophical analysis
of non-philosophical material, to demonstrate their philoshical
skills

Textbook: About Philosophy, Plato’s Republic, articles and documents

Learning Materials: pen/pencils, journal notebook, dictionary

Learning Guidelines/Classroom Expectations

c) Complete all required class work
d) Be Open-minded, Ask Questions
e) Seek original thoughts

Course Grade: A 95%, A – 90%, B – 80%, C – 70%, D – 60%

Graded Work & Turned In: Critical Thinking, Quiz, Journal Notebook and Essay
Work Not Turned In: worksheet, article and document
