AP Chemistry

2010-2011
Welcome to AP Chemistry! The goal of this course is to prepare students for the
advanced placement test that will be taken in the spring. This will be accomplished
through the use of a laboratory-based format that follows the structure suggested by the
College Board.
The textbook we will use is Chemistry, 8th edition, by Zumdahl. We cover the
entire book with the exception of chapters 20 and 21. The chapters and labs we will
cover relate to the instructional objectives and the A.P. exam. Students will analyze data,
devise laboratory procedures, and compare and contrast various concepts. Experiments
will be performed to reinforce the material presented in class, develop good lab
techniques, and show how laboratory techniques can be organized to solve various
problems.
Below is the approximate syllabus that will be followed:

First Quarter Chapter 22 Organic Chemistry

Chapters 1/2/3 Chemical Foundations/Atoms, Molecules,
Ions/ Stoichiometry
Chapters 4/5 Types of Chemical Reactions and Solution
Stoichiometry/Gases
Second Quarter Chapters 6/17 Thermochemistry/Thermodynamics
Chapters 11/12 Solutions/Kinetics
Chapter 13 Chemical Equilibrium
Third Quarter Chapters 14/15 Acid/Base Equilibrium
Chapters 16/18 Aqueous Equilibrium/Electrochemistry
Chapter 19 Nuclear Chemistry
Fourth Quarter Chapters 7/8/9/10 Chemical Bonding
Review for AP Test Review Quizzes

The main points of the grading system are as follows:

• A minimum of three tests will be given each card marking. The syllabus
is organized by test. Tests are worth 40% of your grade.
• Approximately one laboratory experiment will be completed each week.
The goal is to complete 7 laboratory exercises per card marking.
Labs are worth 20% of your grade.
• Quizzes on assigned homework will be given for each chapter with the
quizzes determining 40% of your grade.
• A make-up test will be available for a one-week period after each test.
Students who score below 65% on the first test are eligible to take the
make-up test, and the best score possible on a make-up test is 65%.
• The semester exam is worth 20% of your semester grade.
• The grading scale is as follows:
85 to 100% A 65 to 74% C
75 to 84% B 55 to 64% D
Below 55% E

Class attendance will follow the procedures outlined in the student handbook.
The AP exam will be Monday, May 2, 2011 at 8:00 am.
