NCDOT TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE N.C. 73 AT N.C. 115 IN MECKLENBURG

COUNTY
Closure is necessary for railroad crossing improvements

CHARLOTTE — The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close the intersection of N.C. 73
at N.C. 115 in Huntersville on Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m., through Monday, Dec. 6, at 6 a.m., weather
permitting. The closure is necessary for crews to make improvements to the existing Norfolk Southern
Railroad crossing, in conjunction with the widening of N.C. 73 from west of U.S. 21 to east of N.C. 115.

Motorists traveling west on N.C. 73 should use the following signed detour:
• N.C. 73 to Mayes Road to Bailey Road to N.C. 115 back to N.C. 73.

Motorists traveling east on N.C. 73 should use the following signed detour:
• N.C. 73 to N.C. 115 to McCord Road to Black Farms Road back to N.C. 73.
A $17 million contract funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was awarded to Blythe
Development Co. of Charlotte in October 2009. Work on this design-build project is scheduled to be
completed by December 2011.

Design-build allows the department to contract a team that consists of both designers and a contractor to
simultaneously design and construct the project. Projects can begin sooner and completed faster. The
estimated completion date for this project was November 2012; however, by using the design-build
approach, the project is estimated to be complete almost a year sooner.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed
limit. Plan ahead before driving by visiting the NCDOT Traveler Information Management Web site at
www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel or call 511, the state’s free travel information line for current travel conditions.

For more information on this project, please contact the resident engineer at (704) 455-2958, or visit the
project Web site at www.ncdot.gov/projects/NC73Widening/.
