What is Motivation…
 Motivation is the energizer that makes people take
action.
 A desire that causes a person to act; to have initiative,
spirit or be enterprising
 Highly motivated employee usually work hard
 Poorly motivated people do what is necessary
 Motivation comes from within
 “People do the same thing for different reason, and
different thing for the same reason”
Theories of motivation
 Carrot-and-Stick Method
 Combine fear with incentive reward for
good performance, punishment for bad.
 Carrot = a promised reward
 Stick = goad and punishment

 MASLOW’s Hierarchy of Needs


 McClelland’s Learned Needs Theory

Herzberg’s Motivation‑Hygiene
Theory
According to Herzberg, dissatisfiers
are not motivators. They are also
called maintenance, hygiene, or job
context factors
Satisfiers are motivators – related to
job content
The satisfiers and dissatisfiers identified by Herzberg are
similar to the factors suggested by Maslow
Clelland's Needs Theory of Motivation
