A highest mountain in Malaysia at the 4th Special Olympics Mt. Kinabalu
Challenge on April 17-20 this year. The main objective of this event is to
provide a unique opportunity for the special athletes to heighten their self
esteem and confidence and to help them reach their full potential. This will
also be an effort to break the current record held by a group of 61 intellec-
tually disabled who successfully reached the summit at 4095 metres in
2005. The first record-breaking feat was created in September 1999, where
22 ID people succeeded in their maiden attempt to reach the top of the
mountain. The 3 day challenge involves 110 special athletes accompanied
by a personal escort in total, out of which 40 will be international partici-
pants from Brunei, Taiwan, Philippines and Australia. The journey to the top
of the mountain will be carried out in stages where 55 ID climbers along
with their escort will be flagged off on the first day. The second group com-
prising another 55 will take their turn the next day. There is also another
group of day trippers for the local special athletes to attempt the climb to
the first hut. Come to witness and support this truly inspiring event!

The lepa isn’t just any boat. It is a traditional, single mast sailing boat that played
a central role in the lives of the early nomadic Sea Bajau who lived their entire lives
aboard boats, rarely setting foot on land. The lepa is usually made of ubar suluk (red
seraya) wood, etched with intricate carvings. Brightly-coloured sails, known as

6 Nightlife

Nightlife in the City

abah is matchless when it comes to possessing the most exception-

S al rainforest jungles in the world, but she’s not all about jungles and
wildlife. Kota Kinabalu (affectionately known as KK) has a healthy
number of clubs and pubs that fill up especially on the weekends, with peo-
ple looking for a different kind of wild life. Relax with a pint of Guinness at
one of KK’s many Irish or English pubs or boogie on the dance floor at one
of KK’s sizzling clubs, KK’s night spots create a vibrant atmosphere for
those who are looking for a good time. Many pubs and clubs have live
bands, but there are places where you can sit for a quiet drink and a chat.
Hangouts in KK are aplenty but here are a few of our favourites.
The popular Cock and Bull Bistro on Waterfront is an award-winning
joint, but check out the Cock and Bull at Tanjung Aru Plaza as well or head
over to the Cocoon Restaurant and Bar in Segama. With outlets in KK and
Damai, The Upperstar is another hip hang out with a good menu and free
internet access. Hotel Bars are all the rage in KK, with places like the clas-
sic Shenanigans at the Hyatt Regency, the cool JUGS at Sutera Harbour
Resort and Spa, the trendy Blue Note at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort
and Spa or Le Meridien’s salsa-licious Rumba. Have fun singing the night
away at a karaoke bar in Karamunsing at KK Box. If singing is not your
thing then slightly away from the cluster in KK is Razz Ma Tazz, one of the
largest venues in town. The BED on Waterfront is hot on weekends and
equally so is the Rawk in Penampang.
From loud dance clubs to quiet little bars, you’re sure to find a place in KK’s
energetic nightlife that you can turn into your favourite haunt.

ing us to Tenom, a small town about 3
hours away from Kota Kinabalu, I
thought about what the next two days
would be like. To be honest, I hadn’t the
slightest clue what a coffee adventure
would entail, and expected nothing more than sitting
around and sipping different flavours of coffee all day,

Coffee
which was fine by me.

We pulled into the small town of Tenom and found

a parking spot in front of a huge statue of a brown
man, dressed in the tribal warrior garment of a vest
made out of tree bark and a loincloth hanging down to
his knees. In his right hand he yielded a long blowpipe
and in his left, a wooden shield. It was nice to begin
our stop with a meeting with Ontoros Antanom, a man

Adventure
I had read about in our history books. He was the
revered Murut warrior who was killed in an uprising
against the British in the Rundum District in 1915.

After meeting our host for the weekend, Mr. Tham,

and a plate of satisfying roasted chicken rice, we piled
back into our minivan. “Follow my car,” was the
instruction Mr. Tham gave our driver. “We are going to
the coffee bar to have some coffee.” So, follow him we
did. About a whole minute later, Mr Tham’s red Land
Cruiser turned right, into the front yard of a 2-storey
wooden building that looked like any other kampung
house. We each hopped out of our van and were
greeted by the cheerful Mr Foong Choon Sang, the
undisputed “Coffee King” of Tenom and founder of
Tenom Fatt Choi Coffee. Also there was his son, the
CEO of his company, the young Foong Kim Pang.

Thus began our Tenom Coffee Adventure.

Tenom coffee is not something dismissible. The

mention of ‘Kopi Tenom’ will have many Malaysian cof-
fee lovers oohing and ahhing. It is well known for its
deliciously rich aroma and simply wonderful flavour all
over Malaysia and the neighbouring Brunei, even
when it’s not readily available in supermarkets yet!

Mr. Foong ushered us into the building and we

entered into a cosy space with a small coffee bar on
our left and shelves filled with bags of different blends
of coffee on our right. On the walls in front of us hung
more than a few photos of the proud Mr. Foong and
his famous visitors. We looked a little closer and saw hot showers, a fan and air-conditioning. All cm across. There are 26 species of Rafflesia
