Formulae For preparation of solutions

Preparation of diluted solutions : - concentration in % or Molarity

A =Volume of diluent (dist. Water) :=

O.C- F.C X required Volume of diluted solution(V)
O.C
B=volume of original solution = V-A
Where O.C= concentration of original solution
F.C = concentration of diluted solution

For dilution of acids/alkalis in % :-divide B by density of the original solution

Example 150 ML of 2.8% of Nacl is to be prepared from 6.5% solution of Nacl

Solution-- O.C- F.C X required Volume of diluted solution(V)
O.C
A = 6.5- 2.8 x 150 = 3.7 X150/6.5= 85.38 ml
6.5
B= 150- 85.38 =64.62 ml

Preparation of Molar solutions

Weight of compound required (in g)= Mw x desired Molarity X volume required

1000

example: 250 ml of 2M solution of Kcl molecular wt 84.5 is required

solution Mw= 84.5 Molarity = 2 volume = 250 ml

wt of Kcl to be dissolved in 250 ml of dist water=
84.5 X 2 X 250= 42.25 g in 250 ml of dist water.
