Parliament of Pakistan
Majis-e-Shoora { Council of Advisors in Urda and Persian, although referred to as
“Parliament’) is the federal and supreme legishtive body of Pakistan It is bicemeral
federal legislature of Pakistan that consists of the Senate (upper house) and the National
Assembly (lower house). According to Article 50 of the Constintion of Pakistan, the
Comnell also inchudes the President of Pakistan
The Parliament of Pakistan - viz the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan - met on Augnst
10. 1947 in the old Sindh Assembly Building at Karachi It was in this veme that the
Objectives Reschtion, which now serves as the groud norm of Pakistan, was passed. In
1956, the first Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was adopted in Karachi at
the same Sindh Assembly building which also passed as the Paifament of Pakistan. The
Patiament - the Senate and the National Assembly - have acquired a penmanent abode in
the present Pariament House, which was maugurated on May 28, 1986. The Hall was
renovated on the orders of the Speaker and inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Pakistan
on 3 November 1996.The parkament of Pakisian consists of two houses. upper house is
named as senate and lower house is called as national assembly.
‘The National Assembly of Pakistan is the lower house. It consists of 342 members, 272
of whom are directly clected, 60 reserved for women and 10 for minorities. 13 women
are drectiy elected as Pakistani law requires that at least 20% of the members be wornen,
Presentation of budget is categorically the duty of national assembly. Members of cabinet
‘must be the members of national assembiy.
‘The Senate of Pakistan is the upper house of parliament. It has 100 members; as of 2008,
18 of these members are women, one greater than the required mumiber. According 10 the
constiution, the President camnot dissolve Senate. Members of the Senate are elected
ffom provincial assembles.
