Quiz Monday on one of the questions from 111.
1
Sammi bought some energysaving bulbs for Thanksgiving.
The bulbs cost $3 each and use $4 of electricity for 1000
hours.
Joel bought some incandescent bulbs.
The bulbs costs $1 each and use $12 of electricity for 1000
hours.
CS = 3 + 0.004h
CJ = 1 + 0.012h
1) After how many hours is Sammi saving money compared
to Joel?
2) How much does it cost Joel to use 1000 hours of light?
3) How much does it cost Sammi to use 1000 hours of light?
4) How much does Sammi save over 2000 hours of use?
(compared to Joel's cost for 2000 hours)?

Graphing Homework and Assignments
1) All old assignments have until the end of the week.
2) From now on...
a) Assignments have a 1day grace period.
b) You can ASK me about them before you hand them in.
c) Once I hand them back, you can't hand them in for
marks. (But we can still look over them together.)
d) I calculate two marks for each unit with assignments
and without; you get whatever's better for you.
3
You put me in a difficult position.
1) No cell phones/MP3 players, etc. is the school policy.
2) I know some teachers allow you to break it.
3) I won't do that; it undermines the other teachers.
4) If it's important to you, write a proposal to allow use while
working; we'll talk about it with Mr. Chartrand, and we'll see.
4
Getting it into slope intercept form.
6x + 4y = 3
x + 4y = 6
6x 8y = 7
8x y = 4
Work it...
Make examples for each other
5
How many solutions does an SLE have?
1, 0 or infinity!
6
How do you solve a system of linear equations without your calculator?
Example Sometimes, you can’t find an exact
y = 2x + 3 solution with the calculator. Also,
y = 2x – 1 sometimes, it’s faster to solve an equation
algebraically.
Solving by Substitution means:
• Isolating one of the variables in one
of the equations.
• Substituting the value of that variable
into the other equation.
• This leaves you with only one
variable.
• Then, solve for that variable.
• After that substitute that variable into
either equation to find the other
variable.
7
Example
y = 2x + 3
y = 2x – 1 y = 2x + 3
y = 2x – 1
2x + 3 = 2x – 1
+2x +2x
4x + 3 = 1
Solving by Substitution means: 3 3
• Isolating one of the variables in one 4x = 4
of the equations. x = 1
• Substituting the value of that variable
into the other equation. y = 2x + 3
• This leaves you with only one y = 2(1) + 3
variable. y = 2 + 3
• Then, solve for that variable. y = 1
• After that substitute that variable into
either equation to find the other So, the solution is:
variable. x = 1, y = 1

Example
f + s = 300
f = s + 60 f = s + 60
f + s = 300
s + 60 + s = 300
DID NOT USE ON
2s + 60 = 300
TUESDAY
Solving by Substitution means: 60 60
• Isolating one of the variables in one 2s = 240
of the equations. s = 120
• Substituting the value of that variable
into the other equation. f = s + 60
• This leaves you with only one f = 120 + 60
variable. f = 180
• Then, solve for that variable.
• After that substitute that variable into
either equation to find the other So, the solution is:
variable. f = 180, s = 60
9
Example x + y = 11
10x + 3y = 61 y y
x + y = 11
x = 11 y
10x + 3y = 61
DID NOT USE ON 10(11 – y) + 3y = 61
TUESDAY 110 – 10y + 3y = 61
Solving by Substitution means: 110 – 7y = 61
• Isolating one of the variables in one +7y +7y
of the equations.
• Substituting the value of that variable 110 = 61 + 7y
into the other equation. 61 61
• This leaves you with only one
variable. 49 = 7y
• Then, solve for that variable. y = 7
• After that substitute that variable into
either equation to find the other x + y = 11
variable. x + 7 = 11
x = 4
So, the solution is:
x = 4, y = 7
