Dean Roy;

To summarize discussions on the application of Enviroseal 40 on the interior below grade, slab on grade parking
deck slab. Enviroseal 40 is a water based 40% reactive penetrating silane sealer. In our data data guide under
How to Apply surface preparation is discussed. We offer several suggestions including water blasting, sand
blasting and shot blasting to achieve necessary surface preparation. The bottom line is the concrete surface
needs to be clean, free of contaminants and dry.

Each form of surface preparation has advantages and disadvantages.

Sandblasting has environmental issues; needs to be contained and the dust must be fully removed before
application. Typically not used in interior applications.
Shot blasting is much cleaner but leaves a textured surface and the blast track leaves”stripes”. In addition oil like
contamination must be chemically removed and washed prior to shot blasting. This particularly true in existing
facilities there has been vehicle traffic.
Water blasting should not alter the surface appearance and done correctly should remove dirt and similar
contamination. Oil like contamination needs to be dealt with separately. The concern is the drier the concrete the
better the penetration so adequate drying should be allowed for.
We always recommend a test patch to insure the method of surface preparation in adequate.

There is both cost and appearance considerations in the method of surface preparation chosen. Provided the
concrete ends up clean, free of contaminant and dry prior to the application there is no significant difference in
depth of penetration in new concrete.

I trust this is the information you require. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to call.

Proper application is the responsibility of the user. Field visits by BASF personnel are for the
