Pre-Calculus Notes 1.4-1.

Combinations of Functions:

Sum, Difference, Product, and Quotient of functions:

1. Sum: (f+g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

2. Difference: (f-g)(x) = f(x) – g(x)
3. Product: (fg)(x) = f(x)∙g(x)
f f (x )
4. Quotient: ( ¿ ( x )= g ( x )≠ 0
g g(x)

EX1: For the following problems, determine the combination requested

f(x) = 2x-3 g(x)= x2-1

A. (f+g)(3) b. (f-g)(3)

c. (fg)(x)

EX2. For the following problems, determine the combination requested and state any implied domain:

f(x) = √ x g(x) = √ 4−x 2

g f

Compositions of functions:

(fog)(x)= f(g(x))

(gof)(x) = g(f(x))

Ex3: For the following problems, determine the combination requested and state any implied domain.

f(x) = x+2 g(x) = 4-x2

a. f(g(x)) b. g(f(x))
For the following graphs, determine the combination defined
f(x) g(x)

a. (fog)(2) b. (gof)
(3) c. (gog)(7)

d. (f+g)(1) e. (f/g)(2) f. (f-g)(3)

Determining the Inverse of a function:

To have an inverse, a function must be one-to-one, which means that no two elements in the domain of f
correspond to the same element in the range of f.

From its graph, it is easy to tell whether a function of x is one-to-one. Simply check to see that every
horizontal line intersects the graph of the function at most once.

Two special types of functions that pass the Horizontal Line Test are those that are increasing or decreasing on
their entire domains.

To find the inverse of a function:

1. Use the horizontal line test to decide if f has an inverse

2. Replace f(x) with y.
3. Interchange x and y and solve for y
4. Replace y by f-1(x) in the new equation.

2
The graphs of f and f-1 are related to each other in the following way. If the point (a,b) lies on the graph of f,
then the point (b,a) lies on the graph of f-1. This means that the graph of the inverse is a reflection of the
graph of f in the line y=x.

EX. f(x) = x2+4
