Stengel Chooses 7 Yanks Published: Jume 29, 1958 CHICAGO, June 28—Manager| Casey Stengel today picked fif- teen American League players’ with All-Star Game experience to complete his twenty-five man squad for the annual contest against the National League's stars on July 8. The Yankee skipper's selec- tions for the contest to he played in Baltimore came after) 2 poll of players, managers and coaches had determined the starting line-ups for both leagues. Stengel's starters will include |two players who will be making) their first appearances in the All-Star Game. They are Bob Cerv, a Kansas City Athletics’ /outfielder, and Luis Aparicio, a |Chicago White Sox shortstop. The seasoned hands chosen by Stengel included the Yanks’ Yogi Berra, a catcher; Gil Mc- Dougald, a second baseman, and \Eiston Howard, an outfielder; the Detroit Tigers’ Harvey |Kuenn, and Al Kaline and the games, and started the last eight. Turley Among Pitchers Stengel, whose Yankees had two starters among the eight picked in the poll, raided his own roster for four other play- ers. He also picked Tony Kubek, a shortstop; and Whitey Ford, Bob Turley and Ryne Duren, pitchers. The Chicago White Sox had ‘two starters, Luis Aparicio, a shortstop, and Nellie Fox, a second baseman. The Chicago club furnished a total of five players. Stengel chose a catcher, Sherm Lollar, and two pitchers, ‘Billy Pierce and Early Wynn. Wynn, a right-hander, and Pierce, a left-hander, were the only repeaters from last year's Boston Red Sox’ Ted Williams, outfielders, | This will be the fourteenth year that Williams has been on the squad. He has played in thirteen All-Star games, batting: 333 with twelve runs batted in and twelve home runs. Berra was picked for the eleventh time. He has played in a seven All-Star hurlers. Other pitchers chosen by Stengel were a Cleveland right- hander, Ray Narleski, and Billy O'Dell, a Baltimore, southpaw. ° The’ Orioles’ other player on the squad is Gus Triandos, who beat Berra for the starting job. Cleveland also will be repre- sented by a first baseman, Mickey Vernon. 3 Williams was the third Bos- ton selection. Jackie Jensen won the starting berth in right fig and Frank Malzone was the tup) vote-getter at third base.
