CHAPTER 1 - OVERVIEW OF LIGHTING

1. What is lighting?

q Lighting or illumination : Definition of CIE (International Commission on

Illumination)
The act or process of illuminating or the state of being illuminated .

q Architectural Lighting :
To create an easy-to-see and amusing luminous environment for interior
and exterior of buildings

q Luminous environment :
Physiological and psychological environment created by light and space
surfaces. Can be measured as illuminance, luminance, color, texture,
etc.

2. Why lighting is important?

Seeing is believing. There is nothing like seeing for oneself.

3. Annual Energy Consumption in Commercial Buildings

Electric lighting energy use(kWh) + Cooling load due to light

sources(kcal)

4. Lighting Quantity

Every task has their own lighting level (lux). The illuminance needed for the
task depends on:

(i) the visual difficulty and complexity of the task,

(ii) the average standard of eyesight, and
(iii) the level of visual performanc e required.

e.g normal sight – 100 lux, office – 400 lux, school - ?

Every country has their own lighting standard depend on economy, social and
climate. E.g CIBSE, IESNA

5. Lighting Quality

Good-quality lighting can support visual performance and interpersonal

communication and improve our feelings of well-being.

Poor-quality lighting can be uncomfortabl e and confusing and can inhibit visual
performanc e.

• Harmonious luminance distribution (no strong contrasts)

• Good color rendering(continuousspectrum, appropriate color T°)
• Adequate illuminance level
• No disturbing reflections
• No direct glare
