When was the last time you had a totally carefree holiday? With no bookings to make, no hotels to find, no tickets to buy? Madhya Pradesh's all-taken-care-of package tours organise everything, so you don't have to do anything. Except enjoy yourself. Visit legendary forts, stay in comfortable hotels, explore dense forests.

Hurry, make your bookings now, and get ready to lose your heart in the heart of India!

Madhya Pradesh is not called the 'heart of India' only because of its location in the centre of the country. It has been home to the cultural heritage of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam. Innumerable monuments, exquisitely carved temples, stu pas , forts and palaces are dotted all overthe State.

The natural beauty of the State is equally varied. Consisting largely of a plateau, the State has everything. Spectacular mountain ranges, meandering rivers and miles and miles of dense forests. In fact, a large part of the State is forested, offering a unique and exciting panorama of wildlife. In the National Parks of Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna and Pench, you can spot the tiger; the bison and a wide variety of deer and antelope. But perhaps the best part about Madhya Pradesh is its accessibility. Bordered by five States, it is equally close to major tourist destinations from the North, South, East and West. Whether you are in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai or Kolkata, you're neververyfarfrom Madhya Pradesh!

AMARKANTAK {228 kms from Jabalpur; 45km from Pendra Road.):Source of the river Narmada and Sone, Amarkantak is a great pilgrim centre for the Hindus. Holy ponds, lofty hills, forested surroundings, breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls and an ever-pervading air of serenity make Amarkantaka much sought-after destination.

BARGI : (40 Kms from Jabalpur) Bargi Dam is an extremely scenic picnic spot. M.P.Tourism's Maikal Resort offers cafeteria and water-sports facilities here. The star attraction, however, is the cruise boat "Narmada Queen" which offers cruise rounds on the vast water body and also operates a back-water river cruise "Gondwana Queen" covering about 80 km between Bargi and Mandla.

BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK: (190 kms from Jabalpur; 237 km from Khajuraho): Bandhavgarh National Park is one place where you can be almost certain of seeing a tiger in its natural habitat. Stretching over 448 sq km, Bandhavgarh National Park is rich in other forms of wildlife like deer, leopard, sambar and wild boar. It is equally rich in bird life, home to over 200 species.

BHEDAGHAT (23 kms from Jabalpur): Soaring in glittering splendour, the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat rise to a 1 00 feet on either side of the Narmada and are a treat to behold along with the spectacular Dhuandhar Falls.

BHIMBETKA (46 kms from Bhopal): The Vindhya mountain range is covered by huge rocks, and recent discoveries here of over 600 rock shelters (the largest group in the world) have revealed paintings that date back to the early Stone Age.

BHOJPUR (28 kms from Bhopal): Bhojpur is famous for its exquisite 11th century Shiva temple, Bhojeshwar, and the lake built by Raja Bhoja Paramara. The temple also houses an enormous 7.5 ft. 'Shivalingam' carved out of a single stone.

BHOPAL : The capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal is a fascinating amalgam of scenic beauty, a proud heritage and modern urban planning. An Afghan soldier of fortune, Dost Mohammed (1708-1740) was the founder of the existing city, which is situated on the site of the 11th century city, Bhojapal, founded by the legendary Raja Bhoja. Bhopal represents a harmonic symphony of the old and the new. The old city with its teeming market places, beautiful mosques and quaint palaces still bears the aristocratic imprint of its former rulers.

The new city of Bhopal is equally impressive with verdant, exquisitely laid- out parks and gardens, broad avenues and streamlined modern edifices. The two lakes, Upper and Lower, dominate the city and form its nucleus.

CHANDERI (127 kms from Shivpuri; 37 km from Lalitpur):

A craft centre, famous all over India for its exquisite sarees and brocades, Chanderi, surrounded by hills, lakes and forests is very picturesque. The old Chanderi city has a number of Jain temples of the 9th and 10th centuries, a historic fort dating back to the Mughal period and several monuments ofthe Bundela Rajputs.

CHITRAKOOT (195 kms from Khajuraho; 78 km from Satna): Chitrakoot, 'the hill of many wonders', nestles peacefully in the northern region of the Vindhyas. A place of tranquil forest glades and quiet rivers and streams, where calm and repose pervade. Chitrakoot also has a spiritual legacy that stretches back to the legendary ages; it was in the forests of Chitrakoot that Rama and Sita spent 11 of their 14 years of exile.

GWALlOR: Gwalior is steeped in the splendour of its past. A multitude of reigning dynasties of the great Rajput clans have left an indelible etching of their rule in this city of palaces, temples and monuments, giving Gwalior a unique and timeless appeal. Today, it is a modern Indian city, vibrant and bustling.

INDORE: Indore was built by Rani Ahilyabai, the brave Holkar queen. Situated on the banks of the rivers Saraswati and Khan, this vibrant city has some beautiful monuments associated with the Holkar dynasty.

JABALPUR: Pleasure resort and capital of the Gond kings during the 12th century, Jabalpur was later the seat of the Kalchuri dynasty. The Marathas held sway over Jabalpur until 1817, when the British wrested it from them and left their impression on the spacious cantonment with its colonial residences and barracks. Today Jabalpur is an important administrative centre, abustle with commercial activity.

KANHA NATIONAL PARK ( 165 kms from Jabalpur):

Kanha's sal and bamboo forests, roll ing grasslands and meandering streams stretch over 940 sq km in dramatic natural splendour. It is home to an amazing variety of mammals, including the tiger, leopard and bison. It is also the only habitat of the rare Hardground Barasingha. Besides, there are over 200 species of birds, making Kanha a bird watcher's paradise.

KHAJURAHO: The temples of Khajuraho are India's unique gift to the world, representing a paean to life, love and joy; perfect in execution and sublime in expression. Life, in every form and mood, has been captured here in stone testifying to the craftsman's artistry and the extraordinary breadth of vision ofthe Chandela Rajputs.

MAHESHWAR (91 kms from Indore): Situated on the banks of the River Narmada, Maheshwar is significant for its many temples, bathing ghats and the exquisitely woven 'Maheshwari'sarees.

MANDU (99 kms from Indore): Mandu is a celebration in stone, of life and joy. A tribute to the love shared between the poet-prince Baz Bahadur and his beautiful consort, Rani Roopmati. The balladeers of Malwa still sing of their euphoric romance.

OMKARESHWAR (87 kms from Indore): Situated on the confluence of the Narmada and the Kaveri, Omkareshwar is set in picturesque surroundings. One of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas' in India is enshrined here in the temple of Shri Omkar Mandhata.

ORCHHA (119 kms from Gwalior; 16 km from Jhansi):

Orchha's grandeur has been captured in stone, frozen in time; a rich legacy of the ages. The palaces and temples built by its Bundela rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries, retain much of their pristine perfection.

PACHMARHI (195 kms from Bhopal): Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's most verdant gem. A lovely hill resort girdled by the Satpura ranges, it offers absolute tranquility. Bridle paths lead into placid forest groves of wild bamboo and jamun, dense sal forests and delicate bamboo thickets.

PENCH NATIONAL PARK (92 kms form Nagpur; 195 km from Jabalpur) : The Pench TIger Reserve forming the core of the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park inspired Rudyard Kipling's famous work, THE JUNGLE BOOK. Today, it boasts of the highest density of herbivores in India.

SANCHI (46 kms via Diwanganj and 72 km via Raisen from Bhopal): Sanchi is known for its stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D. The Sanchi Stupa, the best known, was originally built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka.

SHIVPURI (112 kms from Gwalior): Shivpuri is steeped in the royal legacy of its past, when it was the summer capital of the Scindia rulers of Gwalior. Its royal ambience lives on in the exquisite palaces and hunting lodges, and graceful, intricately embellished marble chhatris.
