AUGMENTED REALITY-An Insight Of The Future…...
An elucidation
Augmented reality is one of the happening novelties in the tech arena. It superimposes
interactive graphics, audio and other sense enhancements from computer screens onto real time
environments.

An extended environment is created through the amalgamation of real world and computer
generated world supplements the real world with virtual (computer-generated) objects that
appear to coexist in the same space as the real world.

To put it in layman’s terms “Augmented reality links real and virtual worlds”.

Components of Augmented Reality

1. Head-Mounted Display
 Video see-through systems.
 Optical see-through systems.

It enables the user to view superimposed graphics and text created by the system.

2. Tracking and Orientation

It has a GPS enabled geo-caching system to zero-in the user's location in pertaining to his
surroundings and additionally tracks the user's eye and head movements.

3. Portable Computer
Carries out all the operations with built-in augmented reality packages.
Methodology
1. Combines real and virtual objects in a real environment.
2. Runs interactively, and in real time.
3. Registers real and virtual objects with each other.

Applications
Mechanical Repair, Interior Design and Modeling, Computer-Aided Surgery, Electric
Manufacturing and Diagnostics of Printed Circuit Boards, Industrial Plant Maintenance, Road
Repair and Maintenance.

‘Sixth sense’ – a look-over

'Sixth Sense' is a wearable gestural interface invented by Pranav Mistry, a research assistant and
a PhD candidate at MIT Media Lab that augments the physical world around us with digital
information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

Final say
Augmented reality is no more a SCI-FI phenomenon! The coming era would experience a whole
new computer-user interaction. In the future, the real world with an integrated display would
soon replace the conventional desk-bound computing.
