The Portuguese in Goa levied a capitation tax upon the Hindus as late as the 18th and 19th centuries. It was called «Pensão do Shendy». It was a last flicker of the flame of proselytism which burnt high in the previous centuries, and a symptom of the rapid decay of the Portuguese power. Aurangzeb had imposed a similar Jizya tax and also reflected the decline of the Moghul power in India.
