There was
Al igual que en el presente, en inglés siempre
diferenciamos entre el singular y el plural con el
verbo equivalente a "haber" en el pasado.
Empecemos mirando el afirmativo y el negativo en el
singular y con sustantivos incontables: there was.

Había un moscardón gordo en la pantalla There was a big fat fly on his computer
de su ordenador. screen.

Había tres mil libras esterlinas sobre la There was* three thousand pounds on the
mesa. table.

No había nadie allí. There wasn't anybody there.

No quedaba té en la tetera. There wasn't any tea left in the tea-pot.

No había fertilizante en el cobertizo, pero There wasn't any fertilizer in the shed, but
había herbicida. there was some weed-killer.

*(No olvides que el dinero es incontable, gramaticalmente hablando).

Ahora toca el plural. Hay que tener cuidado a la hora de pronunciar "there" ya que muchos
españoles tienen la tendencia de decir "they", lo que puede llevar a la confusión. Se
pronuncia "zer" (sin "rrr" española).

Había tres crías en el nido del águila. There were three chicks in the eagle's nest.

I don't know if there were that many people

No sé si había tanta gente.
