Paper 4 (30 marks)

1 (a) P - Compound [2]

Q – Element
R – Mixture
S – Compound

(b) Diagram [1] Or

Dissolve Solid R in a beaker of distilled water and stir with a [1]

glass rod. Separate the residue from its filtrate using filter [1]
paper and funnel.
Collect the filtrate with a conical flask. Rinse the residue
(the black specks) on the filter paper with distilled water.
Transfer the black specks to a clean and dry filter paper
and allow to dry. Collect and store the pure sample of black
particles.

2 (a) Oxygen [1]

(b) 21 cm [1]
(c) Nitrogen and carbon dioxide [1]
3 (a) Particles in solids are packed closely together while [1]
particles in gases are far apart.
Particles in solids are orderly arranged while particles in
gases have random arrangement.

(b) i) K and N [1]

ii) K and N [1]

(c) i) Ionic bonding [1]

ii) Covalent bonding [1]

(d) The attractive forces between the positive and negative [1]
ions in M are stronger whereas the particles in N have
weaker intermolecular forces.
4 (a) i) Hydrogen [1]
ii) Bellium, Cellium, Dellium [1]

iii) Vigorous reaction, magnesium dissolves and dellium [1]

metal would be displaced.

(b) i) Copper [1]

ii) Limited resources of metal ores. [1]

(c) 2Bl (s) + 2KCl (aq) → 2BLCl (aq) + H2 (g) [3]

[1] correct salt formed

iv) Reagent - Aqueous Bromine [1]
Result with ethene - Decolourise brown aqueous [1]
bromine.
Result with ethanol - No change [1]
(b) i) The organic compound contains many C=C bonds [1]
ii) Margarine is made by reacting vegetable oil with
hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The
hydrogen molecules are added to the C=C bond.
Hydrogenation of margarine has taken place. [2]

6 (a)

[1] element
[1] Correct drawing [2]

(b) H

[1] Covalent bonding
[1] Correct no of electrons [1]

(c) [1] Any diagram that can collect gas

[1] Proper Labels [2]

(d) Differences
- W is a good electrical conductor in comparison with the
rest of the elements.
- W liberates hydrogen in cold water while there is no [1]
change on X, Y and Z.

Similarities
- X, Y and Z have no reaction in cold water.
X, Y and Z does not have electrical conductivity at room [1]
temperature.
