the TOTEY 1994 Camp Mah-Kee-Nac Danny and Nancy Metzger 190 Linden Ave. Glen Ridge, NJ 07028 (201)429-8522 Dear Reader, ‘As a newcomer to Camp Mah-Kee-Nac this year, I had no idea what to expect when arriving on the campus for the first time. I was unsure and a little scared of what was to come. I'm sure this is the same way many first year campers feel as well. However, I quickly found out that Mah-Kee-Nac was not a place to worry about fitting in. It’s quite amazing to me the atmosphere that exists on the campus. No matter what the weather, or time of day people are always having fun. As Totem editor, I have seen hundreds of pictures come across my desk to put in issues and I don’t remember ever seeing one where campers and counselors weren't smiling. This place is just fun, that's the only explanation. Danny and Nancy Metzger are very caring individuals who always have the well being of the boys in mind. The boys on Apache row always anticipate Nancy coming in to read them a bedtime story. I remember sitting in the cabin during Trips Week and hearing Danny talking on the phone with Norbert. After hearing the details of the trip, his only question was, “Are the kids having fun?". They are great with the kids. It has always been stressed to the counselors at MKN that we are not babysitters. We are here to teach the campers about the various activities, and about living together. ‘The bunk experience is by far the greatest experience at camp. Learning to live with other people, with varying personalities, is no easy task, but a task we all have to learn. ‘At MKN the task has proven to be fun and always exciting. The Totem is to help us all remember the fun and excitement of the Summer 1994. The articles were all written by campers, who put a lot of time and energy into their cre- ation. I would like to take this time to thank all of the campers who gave their time and energy into writing for the Totem this year. I appreciate all your hard work. Finally I would like to say, I hope everyone at MKN had as memorable a summer as I did. Camp Mah-Kee-Nac is by far a great place to be, and to quote Brian Heath from the article written by Jon Berman (Issue #4) “I think MKN is the greatest place you could spend your summer. No matter where you're from.” Sincerely, are oro Ron Morris 1994 Totem Advisor Contents Issue #1: Opening Day Excitement (pg. 2), The Fastest Class At Camp (pg. 3) New Aspirations Bring New Features To MKN (pg.5), Riflery Program Wins NRA Award (pg. 6), Where Have All The Counselors Gone?
