Case study # 1:

“What do they want?”

Ans1. According to Masclow’s theory of hierarchical needs

there are five physiological needs.
1. Basic needs
2. Safety needs.
3. Social needs
4. Self esteem
5. Self actualization.
In this scenario, employees were getting good wages but still
not motivated because there wasn’t any recognition of
employee’s status and prestige.
Employees were in need of love and affection, comfort and
peace. Employees were actually lacking all these
motivational tools. That is according to Masclow’s theory
employees self esteem and self actualization is absent.
According to Alderfer’s theory there are 3 core needs
existence, relatedness and growth.
Same as Maslow’s. Employees were frustrated and not
happy with the organization’s awarding style. When ever
they do something good they always get same kind of
increment. Wages, benefits etc aren’t the only tool to
motivate employee. Manager needs to understand that the
needs of employee are different from other employee and
are not always the same.
Herzberg’s theory states that there are two factors involved
in motivation on employee motivation and hygiene.
Motivators are those who are satisfied from there jobs and
those who are dissatisfied comes in hygiene factor. In this
case the employees were dissatisfied from the job because
Mr. Pat doesn’t able to supervise the employees suitably.
The relation between the boss and the workers was weak.
HR manager was talking about showing some concern about
the life, needs, wants and interest. They want manager to
value them when they do something high-quality and
acknowledge them.

Ans2: Except for the wages and benefits employees expect

to be more comfortable with there work. They need proper
attention, appreciation and recognition from the manager or
supervisor. They expect their boss to be friendly and
communicate and make them assure that he have faith in
them. They think its unfair with them that the person who
don’t have any managerial skills is their vice president. They
don’t want to give their maximum or little effort to the
organization and work only for eight hours a day because
they weren’t happy and satisfied with the supervision. Pat
was Ph. D in chemistry but was not experienced in research
and products development programs. That is why he wasn’t
able to think anything else except for the wages and benefits
to motivate the employees. He actually wasn’t the one who
knows management.

Ans3. If I would be a HR manager in this scenario, I would

recommend Mr. Pat to take notice in what actually is
happening to the employees. He needs to lend a hand with
them, comprehend there desires, wants and troubles they
are facing in the organization or complains they have with
the organization. Make workplace friendly so that employees
could enjoy while working. Positive reception to the
employee is excessively needed. Encourage them and show
them that he cares for them.
