Signing a card can mean you're ina union
A number of unions are asking UC employees to sign cards regarding union membership.
Before doing anything, get the facts about what signing a card and being in a union means.
Signing a union card is a “vote.”
Signing a union card means much more than expressing interest for more information.
+ Ifaunion gets signed cards from 50% of the employees in the target group, that union
will automatically become the designated representative for all employees in that
group — even those employees who didn't sign cards.
+ Ifthe union becomes the exclusive representative, only the union may deal directly with
UC regarding your salary, hours of work, job security and other conditions of
‘employment.
An election to unionize isn’t guaranteed.
+ Under the current “card check’ law, there's no requirement for an open election. If a
union receives signed cards from 50% of the employees in the target group, everyone
in that group becomes unionized.
+ Only when a union receives signed election authorization cards from at least 30% of
employees — rather than 50% of employees to get automatic certification — will there be
an open election that allows you to vote for or against union representation.
UC’s position: Informed employee choice is key
+ Deciding to have a union represent you is a significant decision
* UC neither discourages or supports unionization — UC supports your right to choose for
yourself.
