INTRODUCTION

Introduction:
Seed has been an important agricultural commodity since the first crop plant was
domesticated by pre-historic man. For thousand of years, man cleaned seed of
his food crops by winnowing. This is still an important process, but it is no longer
adequate to supply the kind of seed needed by farmer.

Indian seed industry seems to be on a high growth track. Indian hybrid seeds
are in more than 65 countries including our neighbour Pakistan, where the
exports are estimated at $ 12-15 million in 2005-06. The total export from India,
officially are however recorded only at 11.5 million in 2004-05.

If the seed replacement ratio can be accelerated at desired rate of 25%, then
the market may touch a figure of Rs. 10,000 crore by 2008-09. The hand of
regional and seasonal players if estimated, the market is well over Rs. 75,000
crores.

The share of hybrid vegetables in respective total cropped area ranges

around 28.3% in tomato, 22.9% in cabbage, 1.7% in cauliflower. Through hybrid
seeds average productivity have been increased in tomato by 49.7%, cabbage
(55.7%) and cauliflower (49.4%).

VEGETABLE SEED PRODUCTION IN

HIMACHAL PRADESH:
The agro-climatic conditions of H.P. are widely suited for the production of
vegetables as an off- season vegetables which can be exported to the plains in
order to fetch good premium prices as some vegetables such as Tomato,
Capsicum, French bean, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Peas and Cucumber etc. So, in
order to fetching good profits, it is very important to have good variety of seed so
that production becomes high.

Company

recurring increase of foundation seed. Breeder seed shall be genetically so pure
as to guarantee that in the subsequent generation i.e. certified foundation seed
class shall confirm to the prescribed standards of genetic purity. The other
quality factors of breeder seed such as physical purity, inert matter, germination
etc. shall be indicated on the label on actual basis.

Foundation seed:

Foundation seed shall be the progeny of Breeder seed or be produced

from foundation seed, which can be clearly traced to Breeder seed. Thus
foundation seed can even be produced from foundation seed during the

for the study to know the market share of NSC with respect to other different
private seed company present in the market. This will help the company in
formulating its marketing plan.

Data collection:

The information was collected from dealers as well as

farmers. Interview schedule was prepared to collect the information from dealers
& farmers. The interview schedule is designed keeping in mind the objective of
the study.

Sample size:
20 dealers & 50 progressive farmers were taken as sampling
size for the study.

Sampling unit:

Dealers of Mandi, Hamirpur, Kangra, Shimla and Solan

distt. Were defined as a sampling unit.
Sampling frame:

Convenient sampling was used as a sampling method.

The list of dealers along with area has been prepared by using secondary data.
The list was given by the company. The dealers & farmers were selected from
Mandi, Hamirpur, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Kandaghat and Palampur. The
dealers & farmers were interviewed by using convenient method of sampling.

the state as many framers complained that germination percentage is not
