French word,” me’nagement” i.e. “ the art
of conducting, directing,’
• Latin word” manum agera” i.e. lead by the
hand.
• The process of leading and directing all or
part of an organisation, often a business,
through the deployment and manipulation
of resources.
Management Defined
• Henry Fayol: “ To mange is to forecast and plan, to
organize, to compound, to coordinate and to control.”
• Peter F. Drucker “ Management is an organ; organs
can be described and defined only through their
functions.”
• McFarland : “ Management is defined for conceptual,
theoretical and analytical purposes as that process by
which managers create, direct, maintain and operate
purposive organisation through systematic, coordinated
cooperative human effort.”

• Harold Koontz: “ Management is the art of
getting things done through and within
formally organized group.”
• Mary Parker Follett: “ Management is the
art of getting things done through people”
• George R. Terry: “ a process consisting of
planning , organising, actuating and
controlling, performed to determine and

people and other resources.”

set of activities directed at the efficient and
effective utilization of resources in the
pursuit of one or more goals.”

organisational objectives through the

Management
• Management is the sum-total of all these
activities:
– Determine objectives, plans, policies and
programmes
– Secure men, material, machinery
– Put all these resources into operations through
sound organisation
– Direct and motivate the men at work
– Supervise and control their performance
– Provide maximum prosperity and happiness to
both employer and employees and public at large
