With Sincere Thanks ‘Adrienne Lumpkin 10; Kevin Hill, Anne McLaurin, Keith Sutton, 1° Carolyn Morrison Tistory. This message has been raped to 01/10/2010 07:07 AM A note to the FABULOUS FOUR. At least that is what I think of when I think of you--Mr. Hill, Dr. McLaurin, Mr. Sutton and Dr. Morrison I am sending this note of deep appreciation for your time, effort, patience; for all the stress that the new board members and chairman are causing with their blatant disregard for both what is good in WCPSS and for board protocol. ‘Thank you for asking the right questions, staying on task, and helping to bring to light to their absence of consideration for outcomes in the proposals they are making. Their showmanship and most recent disrespect of the staff is appauling. As an 18 year parent in the system (with 10 more years to go], a business owner, and taxpayer, it is my hope and prayer that with you continuing to do your part, and with’ me and other citizens staying on task to attend board meetings, write LTEs and try to hold the entire board accountable, they will eventually tick off their own [parent] backers and be stopped in their tracks before they do too much damage. In any case, I don't want too much of this note to be about them, but more about you. ‘I realize the huge sacrifice you are making, and I am asking you to hang in there. A LOT of folks have your back and we will keep doing the work outside the board to assist and support you in your role as Board of Education members and people who want to improve, but not tear apart, our school system. Thank you, thank you, thank you! PS. I am the mom who spoke at the Jan 5 BOE (at 7:45pm) about graduation rates, being raised in NJ (Nargictta's stomping ground] in an all white school and comparing that to my 2nd graders experience in a multicultural, diverse socio-economic classroom in Raleigh. 1 KNOW the impact of segregation on many levels and to all parties concerned and it breaks my heart knowing what they are trying to accomplish. Please continue to do the right thing. Be Well, Take Deep Breaths and Laugh out Loud at least once every day Adrienne K. It is so refreshing to see that elected officials actually do deliver on their campaign promises. Do you anticipate reversing some of the recent reassignments to be effective for the 2010-2011 school year? In particular, reassignments based solely on economic status, not overcrowding, as was the case for a number of changes between Athens Drive and Middle Creek High Schools ‘Thank you for your time Penny Keane ‘This message was sent to the following Board members: Mr. Ron Margiotta Dr. Anne McLaurin 2 Fina! Hi School Board members, Why are not all taxpayers being surveyed about the school calendar 7? I pay the bills, I have skin in the game, yet I am not asked my opinion so I am volunteering it .. 1 favor YEAR ROUND schools because of ECONOMY CONTIGUOUS education time ( less forgotten and less review), Keeps children occupied. That said the one minor drawback that I see would be that all children in a family would have to be on the same track, to facilitate vacations etc. I also favor NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS because of ECONOMY (more children could walk to and from school & students would get more exercise) less busing costs for fuel, maintenance and repairs, hopefully more parent participation at schools, PTA ete and probably a few I have not thought of right now. Cheers, Fred Valachovie student assignment - rising siblings - Policy 6200 Chris Malone, Carolyn Morrison, John Tedesco, woynicz to: Deborah Prickett, Kevin Hil, Ron Margiotta, Keith 01/12/2010 11:26 AM Sutton, Debra Goldman, Anne McLaurin Co woynice Dear Board, I have read your draft of changes to Student Assignment, 6200, posted on the WCPSS website. While the changes proposed are good, I am concerned that there are certain issues not specifically addressed in enough detail. I gather that there is a sense of keeping students closer to home (if practical), keeping siblings thogether (if possible), allowing for more parent volunteering, etc. However, I am concerned that this doesn't go far enough in specifically addressing keeping siblings together as the younger sibling is promoted. For example, rising 9th graders are currently not slated under grandfathering to attend the same High School as the older sibling if they were reassigned under the current plan. Rising 6th graders are not currently slated under grandfathering to attend the same Middle School as an older sibling, etc., same for elementary-aged children, regardless of whether or not the younger student has been reassigned to an existing school. Additionally, because of the transfer request timeline, parents will not know until late in the school year, at the earliest, if their transfer has been approved Therefore, I am writing to specifically request that the Board address the issue of grandfathering younger siblings into the same school as the older sibling(s), as long as the older sibling is at that school (i.e., has not graduated). I also request that the timeline for transfer requests be moved to February, which is the timeline that the 8th graders complete their High School course of study enrollment. The course of study is based on the school the student is currently assigned to, and may not be the school where the older sibling is and where a request for transfer would be requested. Growth and Planning did a similar online transfer request last year for grandfathering students into their existing school for the next school year. This was done in February with immediate confirmation via the web from WCPSS I do believe a similar option for transfer can be compiled and made available. This would give the schools an indication of how many incoming siblings to expect, the Board a view of how many siblings were split under the current reassignment plan, and the parents the ability to keep their children together. This would also help parents in their ability to volunteer at just one school as well as put their financial resources into just one school Additioanlly, as a substitute teacher for Wake County, keeping my kids at the same school will afford me the opportunity to continue teaching. I have taught for WCPSS for nine years and volunteer coached for 4 years. This school year alone, I have taught everyday, and have another long-term assignment in the wings when Track 4 returns to school. Thank you for your attention to these matters. I can be reached via email or 919-859-1071 should you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you Sincerely, Amy Woynicz This message was sent to the following Board members: Mz.
