49° Decoding of Part Codes! ‘A company dealing with pipes has coded its items in inventory as a 10 character string as follows: ‘X-LL-DDD-M where, X is procurement indicator T.or F (I for Indigenous; F for Imported ) LL _ is length of the item in metres (two digits always) DDD is the diameter of the pipe in milli-metres (three digits always) M__. isthe material of the pipe (A for Aluminium, S for steel, P for Plastic, B for Brass and G for Glass). For example, F-02-025-B is an Imported, Brass pipe of 2 mts length and 25 mm in diameter. Question: Develop a spread sheet solution to decode the item-code string as shown below: A B c D z F 1 2. F.02.025-B Procurement 3 ‘Material 4 Length 5 Diameter 6 ‘Assume that the item-code string will be entered in cell A2, and B2:B5 contain the titles (xed) as given. Answer the following: i. Range and contents of the material table (use a table for decoding the material code; organize your table in columns E and F) for decoding material code, ii Formulae to be entered in cells C2, C3, C4, C5 to obtain the decoded details in these cells, corresponding to the titles given in cells B2, B3, B4, and BS. The output in-cells C4 and C5 for length and diameter must include the units of measure also. ‘These values should not have leading zeros. For the above example, the result in cell C2 should be Imported; C3 should be Brass; C4 should be 2 mts; and C3 should be 25 mm. 1 Prepared by Prof.T.P.Rama Kao, Indian + of Management, Ahmedabad, as a basis for class ‘roam discussion on problem solving throuth spree sheets.
