Exam “Response” help for “green”

by Anne Enright
Having problems with deciding if
this story has themes or
techniques?
*Since there’s an exam, I will only encourage
the possible themes/ techniques and if
plagiarism takes place, consider yourself to be
extremely stupid and careless. NOTE: this is
only a study aid to help you make the right
decision. **
Theme possibilities:
• After looking at Gertie, we see she lives an
artificial life not actually living to the
fullest. We see this through how she does
everything she’s told or supposed to do,
how she goes with the flow, etc. After
acknowledging this, you can say that one
of the themes would be- Do what’s right
for you, what you want to do with your life
is up to you and no one can tell you
otherwise.-
• Now, with reading several articles, all of

which are telling you how mass production

of food for so many people is ultimately
harmful to both people and the
environment; we know that the school
board is trying to “inform” students of the
world they’re going into. From this aspect,
many themes are applicable: Do not take
things for granted- Everything isn’t as it
seems-Be cautious as to what you buy,
etc.
• TECHNIQUES
These are only possible, and you can
further these ideas in depth

1. Symbolism- Sycamore tree

-the dream of the lake full
of cabbage
- The radicchio (which by
the way is a daisy-like flower whose
petals and leaves can be eaten.)
-axe (she specified to not
get chainsaw)
-the wedding dress she
wore
-her profession
-etc.
2. Point of view- Character name
unknown
-independent
woman
-married
-has children
-is an organic farmer
