Effectiveness of an intervention

Statement of the problem

Sexual abuse is a threat to childrens psychological growth and general well- being all
over the world. It is a social problem that effects families and the future relationships of the
abused individual. It also has a direct effect on the general population. Because, some victims of
sexual abuse may become sexual offenders and victimize other children. This subject is of
personal interest to me after a televised talk show host brought light to this subject. She had an
audience fill with men who had been sexually abused when they were children. The men talked
about how the abuse had a negative impact on their lives. In this study and intervention young
primary school children boys and girls in the first and second grade where the target population.
The Intervention used is a group randomized trial of a theatre-based intervention. My CIOA is
C: If young primary school age children aged 6 to 8 or less I: watched a live theatre play. O: Or
the same play .But, on a DVD. O: Would the context of the play. Which, explains skills and
awareness of how to know what is inappropriate behavior be helpful to children. My practice
question is; what interventions have the best research evidence supporting their effectiveness
with sexually abused children?
Research Design
The research design is an experimental design. This design is used to evaluate the effectiveness
of an intervention or practice method. (Rubin and Babbie 2013). This design controls for many
threats to internal validity because the children were assigned to the groups randomly and there
is a control group that has been assigned but received no intervention so you can compare the

dependent variable the same. Furthermore, you re measure the dependent variable and your
comparison will be different. Any difference between the two groups at posttest reflects the
causality impact of the independent variable.

Sampling
The study used primary school children aged 6 to 7 for the sampling. Random sampling
was used with this method each element has as equal chance of selection independent of any
other event in the selection process. The advantages of this kind of sample is that in social
research it is appropriate to select a set or a group of people or numbers to use randomly.
Measurement
In this study the measurement is self-protective skills six criteria were used to measure
intervention success I. the children had to distinguish between good and bad secrets. 2. Learning
how to talk to someone if something seems strange, or if it feels awkward. 3. Feeling confident
to say no if asked something one does not want. 4. Knowing the difference between a good and
bad touch. 5. Knowing that one should never go with a stranger even if he or she appears to be
nice. 6. Paying more attention to the needs of others and looking after one another.
There were eight scenarios developed to measure gains in self protection skills. Each scenario
was presented with a simple cartoon illustrating the moral of the story. The scenarios were
followed by four questions that had to be answered from the perspective of the child. For some
questions responses were given in a forced-choice format like Is this a good or bad secret. For
others a four point rating scale was used.

Data Collection

It was the participants and design. All participants were measured at baseline 2 weeks before the
intervention. The measure of self-protective skills was administered in a question format. The
live and DVD groups participated in a further follow-up after thirty weeks Participants in the
control group could not be included because they had seen the play in the meantime. A total of
148 first and second graders from three different schools in different parts of a large suburban
district of berlin. (J. Community Appl. Soc. Psychol., 19; 321-329 (2009)

Ethics and cultural consideration

I believe this intervention in this article would be prove to be effective with my population.
Because it teaches children the valuable skills needed to protect themselves from sexual abuse by
child sexual predators. The intervention activities and processes are sensitive to the unique
cultural characteristics of my population. The activities are simple yet effective. Its not too hard
or traumatizing for the children to watch a play or a DVD. It was in a cartoon style so it actually
appealed to their age group.
The researchers did a great job in addressing ethical issues they used approiate images and
cartoons to engage the children. They were respectful of the worth and dignity of the children.
They did everything in an unbiased manner.
Results and Implications

Effectiveness of an intervention

This intervention addresses the need to change the number of sexual abused children in the
world. By sing the prevention as a measure to help alleviate a child being sexually abused and
then needing psychotherapy intervention to deal with a host of psychological problems and
issues that may come up in their future. A child or family counselor or practicing social worker
could implement this intervention. It would only be infeasible if the practicing social worker is
not competence in child or family practice.
