POPPIES GALORE - The RSL Ladies Auxiliary with some of the poppies already knitted to make the wreaths that Tonia Dudzik (centre) is holding. Photo - Helen Tatchell

By Kate Taylor

Locals who can knit or crochet are being

called on to literally help make history.
3000 ANZAC poppies are required
for commemorations for the 100th year
anniversary of the end of WWI, to be
held in Bacchus Marsh in 2018.
The Bacchus Marsh Ladies Auxiliary
has so far made close to 200 poppies,
which will be used to make miniature

wreaths of 10 poppies each to place on

trees in the Avenue of Honour, which
have been dedicated to soldiers.
Member June Webb is among the
knitters busy using up large amounts of
red wool.
I can do about two a night, while Im
watching telly, Ms Webb said.
She added that the knitting group has
already grown from its original four
members.

EUREKA

It was just us, but we have a few others

knitting for us now, weve probably got
about a dozen.
The Great War Centenary Committee is
organising the commemorations, with
schools from the area being enlisted to
help place the wreaths on the nearly 300
dedicated trees.
It is planned that, as when the Avenue
itself was planted, a bugle will be
sounded and a service held.

Locals are being invited to help knit or

crochet the poppies, to help reach the
target of 3000.

The Anzac Centenary Poppy pattern

can be picked up from Bacchus Marsh
RSL from 9am on a weekday, Apple 98.5
FM Community Radio from 9am-12pm
on Thursdays, or from Tonia Dudzik,
President of the Great War Centenary
Committee.

Tragic tales
heard in court
By Jessica Howard
Three men charged in relation to the
death of Springbank war veteran Ken
Handford have appeared in the Ballarat
Magistrates Court.
Adam Williamson, 38, and Jonathan
Cooper, 28, are both facing charges
of murder and aggravated burglary;
whilst Adam Rowe, 38, faces charges of
being an accessory to the murder. All
three men appeared before a committal
hearing on Wednesday (June 21) and
Thursday (June 22).
Mr Handfords body was found in
September last year on what would
have been his 90th birthday.
The committal hearing was told
Williamson and Cooper had allegedly
murdered the Springbank greatgrandfather during a failed robbery.
A female witness who spoke to both
men in the hours after the alleged
murder, said Cooper and Williamson
returned to the house she was staying
at, at about 1am.
She said they seemed rushed and were
looking into wallets to see if there was
anything of value.

They started to tell me what had

happened. I cant remember who said
what, Johnno [Cooper] was doing a lot
of the talking. It seemed as though he
was boasting about it, she said.
I remember Johnno saying that his
body was stiffening up. [Cooper] said,
Im telling you this because you will
probably see it on the news.
The witness, who knew Williamson
through amphetamine use, told the
court she saw the men with half a dozen
war medals, including one shaped like
a submarine. She said she also saw a
blood stained knife, however could not
clarify why this information was not
included in the original police report.
A second female witness said
Williamson contacted her a few weeks
after the murder, saying he needed to
speak with her alone as he had stuffed
up.
She said Williamson had worked for
Mr Handford on his property and
understood the man had a lot of cash
on the premises due to a lack of trust
in banks.
[Williamson] said they only meant
to rob him and when they went to the

mans house he wasnt supposed to be

there, she said.

He said Johnno had a knife and

had stabbed the man in the back.
[Williamson] heard a pop, he [Cooper]
said, Its halfway in, I may as well just
finish the job.

A Darley man has been charged with murder over the

disappearance of 47-year-old Keith Foggin.
Christopher John Trotter, 46, was arrested on Thursday
(June 23) and appeared at a filing hearing in Melbourne
Magistrates Court last Friday.
Mr Foggin, a father and grandfather, was last seen at a

The witness said she had met Mr

Handford once before, when she and
Williamson had been fishing on his
property.
A male witness who spoke to Cooper
in the weeks after the murder said he
was told there was a lot of blood and
that the old man had been hogtied.

Williamson and Cooper will both

plead not guilty to the charges in a
directions hearing at the Melbourne
Supreme Court on June 29.

They will be joined by Adam Rowe,

who will plead guilty to being an
accessory to the murder, after storing
Mr Handords war medals following
his death.
At the request of the court, the identity
of all witnesses has been suppressed.

Third spill in river

has now happened more
than once, it may become a
regular occurrence unless
they find the source and fix
it. We still dont know what
the oil is or exactly how
much effect it is having on
the river ecology.

By Kate Taylor
A mystery oily substance
polluting the Werribee River
in Bacchus Marsh has the
Environmental Protection
Agency stumped.
EPA officers have so far
inspected the River on 10
May, 18 May and 15 June in
response to community reports of oil in the water.
During their first visit
on 10 May EPA officers observed an oily discharge entering the river from a large
concrete culvert, said EPA
Acting South West Regional
Manager Carolyn Francis.
During this inspection we
were unable to trace the pollutant to a source.
In response to the pollutant,
Melbourne Water deployed
a floating boom, which is
still in place today, to contain and absorb the spill
and stop it travelling further
downstream.
On 18 May the flow had
stopped before EPA officers
arrived, and so no pollution
source could be identified.
On 15 June, an EPA officer
observed a small amount
of pollution entering the
river from the same location
as our previous visits, but
again the source could not

With no source of the pollution yet identified, Ms Francis said that the intermittent
nature of the discharge and
the large, complex stormwater system is making it difficult to identify the source.

EPA officers will visit the

area again over the coming
week to conduct site inspections to further investigate
possible sources.

be traced.
After the third spill, Melbourne Water also attended
and deployed a second boom
closer to the concrete culvert
to help absorb the substance.
Ben Courtice, President
of the Moorabool Environment Group and member of
the Friends of the Werribee

River group, said that the

second boom appears to be
catching some oil but is
concerned that no source has
yet been identified.
There is still a bit of a
smell like diesel/old oil, Mr
Courtice said of the contamination site.
Im concerned that as this

Companies and individuals can face hefty penalties

for polluting Victorias waters. On top of any clean-up
costs, which can be substantial, Ms Francis said.

contact with any water that
has a visible sheen.

Flood overlay
abandoned
By Kate Taylor
A controversial Melbourne
Water proposal for a flood
overlay in Bacchus Marsh
has been laughed out of a
Special Meeting of council.
The meeting, which also
heard submissions on the
draft budget, as well as proposed changes to councils
question time policy, was
addressed by a number of
residents concerned about
the effect that the proposed
Amendment C73 would
have.
Most concerns centred
around inaccuracies in the
Melbourne Water documentation, stemming from
the aerial surveying that
was used instead of ground
surveying.
One resident told the
meeting that her insurance
agency had told her that her
premium would rise by $780
under the overlay.
Laughter erupted repeatedly from the public gallery, including when a resident said

the flood modelling showed

that water would run uphill; another pointed out the
model showed that the highest part of his road would
flood but not the gutters;
and one resident was told
her house may be subject to
a two millimetre flood.
But it was resident David
Caligari, a civil engineer for
27 years and with extensive
experience, who set the gallery up for the loudest laughter when he put forward a
presentation on the failings
of the overlay.
His presentation, which included ground-truthing by
a licensed surveyor, was so
comprehensive that the Melbourne Water representative
asked for a copy of it.
He pointed out that the
overlay was based on modelling, not facts, for one-in-100year flood events, adding
the aerial survey was flawed
as measurement devices
give false readings through
structures and tree canopies.
He noted also that the mod-

elling was based on a survey

done in 2010, before trees in
the river have been cleaned
up and removed.
I recommend that council
abandon this; there is no way
that they can confidently say
this is accurate, Mr Caligari
said.
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan voted against abandoning the overlay, saying it
should instead be deferred
and pointing out that there
have been three flood events
in Moorabool in the past 30
years; East Ward Councillor John Spain also voted
against abandoning the
overlay.
With only four councillors
present at the meeting, two
councillors voted against
abandoning the proposal,
and
councillors
Tonia
Dudzik and Allan Comrie
voting in favour of abandonment, Mayor Comrie used
his deciding vote to see the
proposal abandoned.

The CFA home fires are still

burning with the Bacchus
Marsh Group of Fire Brigades joining together last
Sunday for a volunteer rally.
Western Victoria MP Simon
Ramsay showed his support for the CFA volunteers
alongside Coalition candidates for Ballarat Sarah
Wade and Paul Tatchell.

The rally took to the Main

street and through the shopping centre before gathering
at the Village Green to hear
from speakers supporting
their cause.

Mr Ramsay said he was

proud to stand with CFA
volunteers and community
members at Bacchus Marsh
on Sunday as a show of
strength and respect to all
firefighters.
Coalition candidates for
Ballarat Sarah Wade and
Paul Tatchell joined me
alongside many CFA supporters gathering to protest against the Andrews
Government and the UFU,
which is trying to give CFA
volunteer operation management to UFU career-

based firefighters through

the EBA.

Sarah Wade said Catherine

King has gone into hiding
and refuses to be honest
with Ballarat residents on
whether she backs our volunteers or Labors union
bosses.
This is not a State issue
and voters deserve to know
before Saturday where she
stands on this vital issue.

If she wont stand up for

CFA volunteers, she wont
stand up for Ballarat, Ms
Wade said.

whether voters would know
the outcome of an investigation, into possible breaches
of the Local Government

the spokesperson said.
The Inspectorate is mindful of the local government

up to the performance, with rehearsals
held at the church every Wednesday at
7:30pm.

The toilets at Egans Reserve just cant keep up with

things but a push for new
ones has been blocked.
A budget submission made
by the Greendale Reserve
Committee of Management
pointed out that the current
three-stall facility was built
before the reserves recent
surge in popularity thanks
to continually improving
facilities.
However, since the completion of the rotunda, playgrounds and exercise track,
the reserve has seen a much
increased patronage. The result is that the toilet block is
now hopelessly inadequate
to deal with the demands
placed upon it, the submission reads.
The submission said now
that Egans Reserve is the
main social meeting place
in the town, other than the
hotel, it needs a new toilet
block preferably one similar to that recently built at
Moon Reserve in Bacchus
Marsh.
The reserve is regularly
used on weekends for
childrens birthday parties, social gatherings for

interest groups and family

functions.
Replacing the toilet block
is the highest priority on
the Reserves Master Plan
2016-2021; the submission
also notes that the building
is also unsafe, with joining
walls not interlocked and
able to be shaken, loosening
the mortar between the cement blocks.
A response provided by
council officers states that
project has been assessed for
the long-term capital works
program, but is not recommended for the upcoming
budget.
The toilets are currently
maintained and cleaned by
Moorabool Shire. The three
cubicles that exist in the existing toilets are considered
adequate for general use at
the reserve. It seems that inadequacies may exist during
large events only and these
could be catered for by the
use of portable toilets, the
council response reads.
Although not considered
a priority at this stage, it is
recommended that this project remain in the long term
CIP list for consideration in
future years.

Crime increases
across shire

By Jessica Howard

The crime rate in Moorabool Shire has

jumped more than 16 per cent, with offences such as drug trafficking and robbery continuing to rise.
Statistics show there were 2,250 offences
recorded in Moorabool by Victoria Police
in the year to March 2016, up 16.2 per
cent compared to the same period last
year.
This places Moorabool well above the
statewide increase of 12.4 per cent.
Major offence categories that showed
the highest significant upward trends
were drug dealing and trafficking (76%),
robbery (100%), assault (42%) and breaches of orders (161%).
Bacchus Marsh Inspector Brendan McCrory said the figures were disappointing, but not surprising.
We have weekly meetings where we
monitor our crime rate, so I was aware
that crime in Moorabool was increasing.
Unfortunately, I dont think we will ever
be in a position where we will arrest ourselves out of crime; but we need to work
together, in partnership with both the
community and the department, to address the issue across the whole state,
he said.
What I would be asking of the community is to victim harden themselves, and
in saying that I mean we need houses
to be locked, vehicles to be locked and
valuables to be removed from those
vehicles.

News

Inspector McCrory said metropolitan

crime was creeping into rural areas,
with criminals from Melton, Geelong,
Werribee and Ballarat pursuing what
they know to be a softer target.
The rural areas are being targeted
by groups of youth who will do entire
streets, trying every door handle they
can until they find one that is unlocked.
Areas that arent built up are also being
targeted because there is a lack of visibility from neighbours and most rural
properties are known to have a motorbike or chainsaw that can be disposed of
easily.
The community just needs to be aware.
Country people will recognise vehicles
that dont belong in certain streets and
they need to act on their suspicions by
contacting triple-000 and/or Crime
Stoppers.
Inspector McCrory also commented on
the 161 per cent increase in breaches of
orders, stating that there was a valid reason for the concerning figure.
The reason the number has increased
is due to the huge media and political
push against family violence. People
are now willing to report even minor
breaches, knowing that action will be
taken, he said.
It is certainly disappointing that people are breaching [their orders], but I also
take comfort in knowing that victims are
prepared to let us know when an order is
breached so that we can act upon them
immediately.

Health being by-passed

By Jessica Howard

The cardiac ghost wing at Ballarat

Base Hospital needs to be opened,
says local National Candidate for
Ballarat Paul Tatchell.
The Federal Government allocated
money to the Ballarat Hospital last
year in order to distribute and fit-out
a Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory
(Cath Lab), however any sight of a
by-pass facility is still yet to be seen.
Tatchell said the wing needed to
be opened and properly funded by
the State Government in order to
provide a one-stop shop for Cath
Labs, by including by-pass surgery
equipment to compliment the skilled
hands of Ballarat surgeons.
With the National Heart Foundation reporting 32.3 per cent of Ballarat people suffering cardiovascular
disease, the highest rate in Victoria
and second highest nationwide, the
need speaks for itself, he said.
Each year, $7 million is filtered
through to Melbourne hospital for
by-pass surgery, however Tatchell
said the buck needs to stop here.
We already have surgeons with
the appropriate skills in place, but
we just dont have the equipment,
meaning if you need the surgery you
need to go to Melbourne. As a result,
Ballarat loses $7-million out of our
health economy every year.
Why would you set something up
in the biggest regional hospital in
Victoria and only do part of the job?
Mr Tatchell said by re-opening the
wing, the risks of moving patients
between diagnosis and surgery

would be eliminated and

the return on investment
would be realised within
12-months.
He said the opening of the
wing would also provide a
net benefit to Ballarat residents and the wider Australian taxpayer.
This is about regional

investment where the solution pays for the problem

without burdening the taxpayer. A Regional Health
Investment Fund should be
established, where critical
medical equipment can be
purchased and amortised
for a return to the fund, for
future investment.

Take a seat under a tree

By Kate Taylor
A movement pushing for
more public art is putting
down roots in Bacchus
Marsh.
The idea, driven by the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council,
is already starting to take
shape in the form of a large
sculpted tree with a community bench seat around it.
Talented local artist, and
public art specialist, Anuradha Patel designed the
tree which is four to five metres high and made of two
separate elements, with both
combining to form a canopy
of leaves.
The elements are symbolic
of different communities
coming together, and the top
of it flourishes into a union,
Ms Patel explained.
The main part is going
to be rusted metal, and the
leaves will be stainless steel
with laser-cut designs in
them - those designs, thats
where were looking for the
community to contribute to
that.
Ms Patel explained that
the tree itself has seats underneath it, for a very good
reason.
My thinking about the
seats is that Im from India
originally, and every village
has a beautiful tree with a
round seat around it, and its

a place where you find everyone - its the heart of a village, the heart of a town, and
thats the idea behind my
sculpture, it will create a focal point; the art will have a
little part, but the main part
is to bring people together
and have a talk.
Meanwhile the leaves will
be up to half a metre across,
and the designs could tell
stories about the locality, or
be a symbol from different
places, or a poem the ideas
are endless.
The leaf shape can form
other significant elements in
the town, it could be a sign,
almost like a connection
made by the tree into the
larger township.
BMAC President Ray Newton explained that the sculpture, and its extending art
works through the town, is
known as the place making
project, and grant applications are currently before
council.
The project is to establish
a monument to represent art
and a meeting place in Bacchus Marsh, Mr Newton
said.
A tree represents Bacchus
Marshs demographics and
its history, its agriculture
and industry and spinoffs from this place marker
will be scattered around
the town, in the form of the
leaves.

Mr Newton said the leaves

could be put inside and outside buildings, and could
be designed by groups or
schools as well as individuals and organisations.
The project is in its infancy, and it requires a hell
of a lot of work and permits
and funds - its a long-term
project.
Formed a year ago, BMAC
is an incorporated body
with a strategic plan for the

development, growth and

sustaining of art in all its
forms in Bacchus Marsh
with the integral involvement of all facets of the local
community.
BMAC meets on the first
Monday of each month from
7.30pm at the Lerderderg
Library, with new members
always welcome.
For more information contact Ray Newton on 0400 842
282.

Public Art in the Park

Meanwhile, BMAC member Kylie Burton is helping drive
the push for more public art in one of Bacchus Marshs
most iconic places, Maddingley Park.
Working with Maddingley Park Committee Chairman
Russ Hendry, they are working towards having a lot
more art in the park.
Were really keen to put something together that the
community is engaging in; in what it is, where its located,
the significance of it, Ms Burton explained.
Were hoping to work with lots of community groups to
get the community engaged, and therefore the ownership
of the community art.
The art is intended to link pathways and places of
significance, iconic places such as the Avenue of Honour
and Maddingley Park, and tie them up in a way that is
unifying for the town.
And whats going to unify it will be part of the consultation
with the community. But the vision is something along
the lines of the way Geelong is being recognised for the
bollards, something that has that sort of recognition.
Having an Arts and Culture officer again working at
Moorabool Shire council is also on the BMAC agenda.
Everyone else in the region has one, and their arts are
flourishing.

A bushfire management plan created by

the Maddingley Brown Coal Community
Consultative Committee (MBCCCC) has
been commended by the Country Fire
Authority (CFA).

Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade and MBCCCC

conducted a site familiarisation, inspection
and testing of the fire suppression system
earlier this month.
MBCCCC member and Bacchus Marsh
Fire Brigade 1st Lieutenant, Phil Clayden
presented his report of the training exercises
to the committee on June 8.

We had 35 CFA members spend the night

on site, conducting testing and running

exercises and scenarios, he said.

Testing was successful and provided us
with an opportunity to witness the operation
of the fire suppression system first hand. I
was really pleased with the exercises.
The report contained four recommendations
including purchasing additional hoses
and improved marking of hydrants.
MBCCCC has agreed to implement all four
recommendations before the declared fire
season.
Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade officers attended
the site prior to testing to ensure basic
connectivity between fire trucks and the fire
suppression system. The CFA congratulated
the MBCCCC on its comprehensive planning
and emergency management strategies.

Letters to the Editor

TOM

Dear Editor,
There have been a lot of
lies told about the new CFA
agreement. And these lies
are causing unnecessary
concern for volunteers and
the communities they protect every single day.
This nasty and spiteful dispute went on for over 1000
days. It simply couldnt go
on for another 1000 days and
thats why weve brought it
to a close.
Under the agreement, CFA
volunteer fire stations will
continue operating as they
always have with their
own independence, their
own special connections to
the community, and their
own unique knowledge of
their local area.
The role of volunteer firefighters in this state is sacrosanct. At no stage has our
Government questioned it or
jeopardised it.
It is time to debunk the lies
of this nasty scare campaign:
1. The need to dispatch seven firefighters to a fireground
is limited to 34 integrated
stations in highly populated
areas, like Frankston and
Geelong. This wont apply to
the other 1200 CFA stations
around our state thats 97%
of them.
2. There is no veto power in
this agreement. Like most
workplaces, there will be
consultation on issues that

affect the employment of career firefighters, such as the

recognition of prior learning. But lets be very clear,
there is no veto power.
3. The agreement specifically states that the role of
volunteers is not altered by
the agreement, and to suggest it will destroy the CFA
is the most irresponsible lie
of all.
I promise your readers this:
by the time the next fire season rolls around, this long
running dispute will be
behind us, the CFA will be
stronger than ever before,
and so will be the dedicated
volunteers who have protected our state for so many
years.
In the meantime, the Emergency Services Minister
James Merlino and I will be
visiting volunteer and career
firefighters across Victoria
to explain the agreement, to
listen to local brigades and
to honour the work done by
volunteer and career firefighters to keep our state
safe.
Hon Daniel Andrews MP
Premier of Victoria

Dear Editor,
Daniel Andrews claimed on
Monday 20 June the role of
the CFA is sacrosanct, but

his bullying actions are set

to destroy the organisation.
If Daniel Andrews actually
believed his own words, he
would have stepped in to
protect volunteers instead of
selling them out to repay his
union debts.
The only thing sacred to
Daniel Andrews seems to
be the support of the United
Firefighters Union.
Daniel
Andrews
also
claimed there is no union
veto clause in the EBA only
consultation.
The former CFA chairman,
who was directly involved
in the negotiations, certainly
didnt see it that way.
On Monday he told 3AW
Radio that he feared the EBA
would effectively see them
living at Fair Work to resolve disputes.
The CFA board, for their
protection of volunteers,
were sacked by Daniel Andrews, and the former Minister Jane Garrett and former
CFA chief executive Lucinda
Nolan were bullied out of
their posts.
Daniel Andrews and Bill
Shorten have abandoned
the CFA and its 60,000
volunteers.
The Federal Coalition Government has also pledged to
amend the Fair Work Act to
protect volunteers from the
EBA changes if re-elected on
July 2.

This is in stark contrast to

Mr Shorten who says this is
a State issue and therefore he
wont show any leadership
by stepping in to help Victorias 60,000 CFA volunteers.
Peter Walsh MP
Leader of The Nationals
Shadow Minister for
Agriculture & Water

Dear Editor,
I refer to the article Name
only change to hospital
(MN June 21, 2016), regarding changes to the Bacchus
Marsh Hospital Emergency
Department. My daughter
recently suffered concussion
playing football, on presenting her at the now Urgent
Care Centre (ex-Emergency
Department) I was told that
as a result of the changes she
no longer could stay in the
department and be monitored (a service provided by
Emergency Departments),
instead we would need to
either take her to Sunshine
Emergency Department or
take her home where the
responsibility was ours to
monitor her. The doctor on
duty expressed disappointment that the department
had been downgraded and
proceeded to show me a list
of service changes as a result
of becoming an Urgent Care

Environmental Opinion

Centre. For a Djerriwarrh

Health Services spokesperson to say it is a name
change only and services at
the Bacchus Marsh Hospital
have not changed since the
Emergency Department was
renamed appears to be
incorrect.
Bacchus Marsh is a rapidly
growing centre and to have
our Emergency Department
downgraded is clearly disappointing. The community
deserves a full and honest
explanation of what this
change really means, why it
has happened and if there
is any plan to restore the
Emergency Department in
our town.
Matt Woods

Dear Editor,
It was so entertaining to
again read Tatchell in full
flight: to re-imagine the
snarling twisted visage,
quill clenched in bunched
fist as around the sneering
frothing lips the furiously
flicking tongue scuttles with
the feverish eyes darting to
and fro as the torrent of bile,
misinformation and frankly, visceral hate for anything
which might suggest Social
Contract is poured into
public consciousness.

What a pity though, the

Nationals candidate seems
to think that by acting in
the public interest by closing down the toxically polluted Fiskville training facility the Labor Government
is harming the community
by actually protecting its
fire-fighters.
What a pity the Nationals
candidate is not as forthcoming as to the complicit underthe-carpet tactics of CFA
management of the time in
seemingly sidestepping this
issue.
What a pity this Nationals
candidate wrongly conflates
this with the long term
troubles at Bacchus Marsh
Hospital (currently being addressed by the State Government) by suggesting without
evidence, it is somehow under threat.
What a pity the Nationals
candidate in his rabid support of the politicisation of
the CFA ignores the real social damage this will do to
what is essentially a social
grouping for the benefit of
disparate communities.
When the next subs collection is due, can the Nationals candidate advise
whether I should sign the
cheque to Parakeelia or
just Liberal Party HQ?

No turning back it is make or break

Tim Flannery, after diving on the

Great Barrier Reef a few weeks
ago said it was, one of the saddest
days of my life. It was also a day
of intense anger. This is the
same Tim Flannery who rode in
a tinny on TV and was concerned
about the state of the rivers in
Australia but still could smile
and enjoy the beauty. We have
moved on from those days. These
days are not ones of smiling and
enjoying the beauty; especially
when that beauty is the Great
Barrier Reef. As Tim said, There
has been a concerted campaign to
underplay the seriousness of the
massive bleaching on the reef and
to confuse the public. While the
Climate Council has been getting
the facts out in the media, I thought
it was also important to see it for
myself, talk to top reef scientists
and dive operators who see the reef
every day. Months after the initial

bleaching, Id hoped to see signs

of recovery. However, the areas
we visited were still in decline.
Having witnessed the damage,
I can tell you it is an unmitigated
catastrophe. You can see in the
video (check out the video on
YouTube under Climate Council)
that much of the coral on the reef
we visited is sick, dying or dead.
Corals that were bleached white a
month or so ago are now covered
in ugly brown algae. Other coral
is bright white and under intense
stress.
Tim goes on, What I saw in
our waters now haunts me. It is
absolutely outrageous that it has
come to this. The bleaching didnt
need to happen. It is not natural.
This has been caused by decades
of inaction on climate change, the
relentless burning of coal, oil and
gas. The decisions made in the

next three years will be critical to

the long term survival of the reef.
This is make or break. Lets make
sure climate change stays in the
headlines and at the top of peoples
minds in this Federal election
campaign.

Might I dare repeat Tim Flannery

- Lets make sure climate change
stays in the headlines and at the top
of peoples minds in this Federal
election campaign?

It is not about jobs and growth any

more. It is not about Medicare and
the like anymore. As important
as these are they do not address
the main issue. If the planet goes
under, jobs, growth, education,
Medicare or even the NBN will
be just so much floating debris. If
we have action on climate change
as the focus then we can say jobs
for a new renewable future and
growth in ideas to help us face the

hard facts and Medicare support

and education for all of the issues
we face.

We need climate change as the

central part of any policy.

Now I am aware that the Green

Party has had that focus for years
and therefore the two major parties
have a problem with this. But we
are way beyond party politics now.
Way beyond. We are all in this
together and we all need to face
this together. We are, as so many
have said, on a war path. And
we havent really brought this on
ourselves. The powers that run the
governments have thrust it upon
us. There are many of them but
by far the biggest is the fossil fuel
lobby. We need to stand against
them here and now.
Among all the words spoken
in Tasmania by the locals who
have experienced the recent

floods the ones that stand out are

unbelievable, incredible, I have
never seen anything like it I
thought such and such but and so
on. And yet when asked what they
would do now that the farm has
been so damaged one person said,
Well we know it wont happen
again. The one in a hundred year
phenomenon was very useful
once. It now no longer applies. It is
now no longer useful at all.
Question for candidate/sitting
member if you happen to pass
them by; what do you think of the
comment that our modern way of
life is driven by a death urge, an
urge to destroy life?
What is your opinion?

Certain seasons are seen as

a defining time for selling,
and this seems to be the case
in many areas in regional
Victoria.
Its no surprise that visitor
numbers to the north-east of
the state are generally higher at this time of the year, as
snowfalls close in and Victorians head to the ski fields.
Not only are there more visitors, but an increase in the
number of house hunters.
New REIV data shows
that close to 30 per cent of
all annual sales in the Alpine region, in Victorias far
north east, sold in the three
months to 30 June.
Closer to Melbourne, the
Macedon Ranges also recorded a high number of
transactions in the same
three months, when 27 per
cent of all homes are sold.
And in the Hepburn Shire,
28 per cent of homes are sold
in winter, according to the
REIV data, collated over the
past five years.
While the colder months are
a drawcard in the north-east
and Macedon Ranges, the
Baw Baw Shire, in central
Gippsland, which borders
the famous ski field, sees
a twin peak in sales with
a small lift in the number
of transactions in the three
months to 30 June (25 per
cent of all sales), but an even
greater increase in sales in
the final three months of the
year (when 29 per cent of all

sales take place), as bushwalkers flock to the region.

And in the west of the state,
the Corangamite municipality, beyond the Otways, sees
a small increase in the June
quarter, with 28 per cent of
all sales in the three months
to 30 June.
Meanwhile, coastal towns
closer to Melbourne not
surprisingly - see buyer
interest increase as winter
fades. In the Surf Coast
Shire, threaded by the famous Great Ocean Road,
around 29 per cent of all
sales are achieved in the final three months of the year.
And in the far west of the
state, the Wimmera LGA
records 26 per cent of all
sales in the three months to
30 September, and a further
31 per cent in the final three
months of each year.
Similarly, the Strathbogie
municipality in central Victoria, draws a high number
of buyers in the second half
of the year, with 22 per cent
of all sales in the September
quarter and 31 per cent in
the December quarter.
Mildura also sees an increase in the latter half of the
year. The increase peaks in
the December quarter, when
about 29 per cent of sales are
delivered, as travellers head
north to enjoy the famous
Murray River.
Interestingly, sales are constant in some of the states
biggest
regional
cities,
with strong buying interest
across most seasons. In Ballarat and Bendigo, there is
a slight lift in sales (26 per
cent) in the June quarter,
however this level of sales
differs little to other seasons
highlighting that the central Victorian centres are on
buyers wish lists for most of
the year, even in mid-winter
when temperatures fall and
the fires are lit in homes
across the two regions.

LEOJuly 23-August 22

Its time to celebrate as financial responsibilities begin

to diminish. This week should be romantically upbeat.
There are some career disappointments, but they are
strictly temporary.

QUICK PUZZLE

The focus is on property dealings and dont hesitate to

request a second opinion from trusted relatives. In relationships, you start to believe that opposites really do
attract.

LIBRASeptember 23-October 22
Weekdays offer times for relaxation and socializing. Relatives need your encouragement throughout the weekend
and romance becomes more complex by Thursday.

ARIESMarch 21-April 20

Approach romantic situations with renewed optimism.

Colleagues are at a lost for words - which proves a very
welcome relief. On the homefront, responsibilites
increase.
TAURUSApril 21-May 22

Partnership activities are accented through the week.

Communications are positively spotlighted. Correspondence carries more importance than usual. An absent

gains are spotlighted after the weekend, but keep the good

CLUB

Cobra News Flash

A big congratulations goes out to our very own Travis Hodgson who was
presented with the certificate for the AFL Goldfields Coach of the Month for May.
This was awarded to Travis from all leagues across the AFL Goldfields region
and was awarded not only for the outstanding performance of his Senior team
through the season so far, but also for his conduct as a Senior coach.
Travis was very pleased to win the award and be recognised for this coaching
effort and remarked that considering there were more players lost to the club
from last years team than new players arriving this season, the young team had
developed a great belief in their ability to win games.
Congratulations also to Taniesha Casey who last weekend was awarded the
Ballarat Football Netball League Youth Girls Spirit of Youth Girls Football Award
for being voted the Fairest & Best Player.
Congratulations also to Ally Symons who won the Round 9 Stocklands A Grade
Player of the Round. This is Allys first season at the club
A special announcement to all supporters, members, players and anyone else
interested, on Sunday July 10th the club will be having a current AFL legend in
Luke Hodge attending Maddingley Park and will be joined by a previous AFL
Legend in Doug Hawkins; both these guys will be on a panel and available for
Q&As from the crowd that attends. The cost is $50 per head which includes
your 1st drink free and a light lunch, the day kicks off at 12:00pm and finishes at
2:30pm which will be followed by a poker day starting at 3:00pm. EVERYONE IS
WELCOME TO ATTEND.

Round 10 v Waubra

Football

After a frosty start, the

Seniors got underway in
ideal conditions and the
Roos quickly got into gear
and were full of run. The
Blues backline was under
intense pressure and Sam
Sims was kept very busy.
The Blues had limited opportunities up forward and
finally managed their first
goal before the main break.
Waubra had a 7 goal lead at
the main break and in the
second half they continued
to dictate play. Zac Peoples
battled relentlessly all day as
did Danny Mullane who was
busy at the key contests. The
team welcomed Chris Povey
to the line up and he put in
a respectable performance,
but in the end Waubra had
to many winners across the
paddock. The Blues next
venture to Snake Valley to
take on Carngham Linton
with only 7 rounds to go.
Final Scores - Ballan 3 8 26
lost Waubra 15 8 98
Best - Z. Peoples, T. Dela-

The Reserves had a similar

encounter and were undermanned. They did start
reasonably well but, Waubra had too many runners,
especially up forward. Jack
Shaw was a great contributor in the middle and Juddy
had a titanic task at full back.
The other Blues runners, like
Dave Bell and Mason Currie, had plenty of the ball but
time and again the Roos intercepted the Blues forward
moves. David OHanlon was
also under intense pressure
all day and the crew were
relieved when the final siren
sounded. The Trickey brothers did manage to convert up
forward but their opponents
were far too clinical.
Final Scores - Ballan 4 3 27
lost Waubra 17 15 117
Best - J. McGuire, J. Shaw, D.
OHanlon, D. Prozzo, D. Bell,
M. Currie
When the U18s warmed
up the Roos shot out of the
blocks and kicked 7 unanswered goals in the first
quarter. It looked like the
Blues were set for a thrashing
but in the second quarter the
Blues stemmed the bleeding and started to reel their
opponents in. In the third
quarter the Blues scored
4 goals and the Roos only
managed 1. Campbell Sparrow rucked well and took
some strong marks when
it counted. Sam Wilkinson
was superb in the backline
and Hayden Thompsons
possession count grew as the
game progressed. In the end
the first quarter lapse cost
the Blues the match as they
out scored their opponents
in the other 3 quarters.
Final Scores - Ballan 6 2 38
lost Waubra 11 10 76
Best - S. Wilkinson, R. Bongart, Z. Boland, H. Thompson, L. Snaith, A. Pascoe
The Under 15s were unstoppable and had all the play
from the first bounce. Up
forward Jack McGregor was

the focal point and he ended

with 4 goals, and Mac Popple mopped up any wayward balls, kicking 2 goals.
There were 11 goal scorers
at the end of the day. The
only criticism of the crew
was their lack of system and
teamwork with too many
players running their own
agendas. Coach John Mullane was relieved to be back
in the winning circle. This
solid win will boost the
Blues percentage.
Final Scores - Ballan 18 12
120 def Waubra 0 0 0
Best - J. McGregor, J. Monaghan, M. Storey, D. Pascoe, B.
Neumann, W. Snaith
The Under 12s had another
convincing win with their
6th win on the trot. Cody
Gates was at his usual best
in the forward line and, even
though the ball did not venture down back too often,
Sid Battinson took a great
mark and set up a goal from
centre half back. All in all
another great week from the
little tackers and their hard
work at training is showing
signs on the paddock . The
Blues held their opponents
scoreless and certainly handled the chilly start very
well.

11 athletes represent the Centre on
Saturday at the Western Metro Region

Geelong Baptist College, Lovely Banks.
After an extremely cold start to the day,
the sun began to shine by mid-morning,
although temperatures were still quite
chilly. The rain during the week made
the course very heavy underfoot and
after a few races the start line and
occasional hill became quite slippery.
Riley Dart was Bacchus Marshs only
medallist for the day, finishing in second Riley Dart (left) Under 15 Silver Medallist
place and claiming the silver medal for
