Student's Content Comments:

I engaged learners in real world problems and was able to
recognize the learners misconceptions during lessons.
Teacher's Content Comments:
Tessa worked really hard to learn more about the concepts that
she taught to the students. She learned that teachers need to have
a lot of background knowledge in order to be able to thoroughly
teach lessons. 3rd graders ask a lot of questions and Tessa was
ready for them with an answer or a way to find out the answer.
Being a special education major Tessa had a clear understanding
of how students learn and how to engage them in their learning.

Instructional
Practice

Student's Instructional Practice Comments:

By getting comfortable with the content in my future classroom I
will allow me to develop the use of effective questioning strategies.
Teacher's Instructional Practice Comments:
My classroom has a wide variety of learning needs. I also teach
science to all 87 third grade students. This diversity has exposed
Tessa to many situations that are not regularly seen in the
traditional classroom and she has adjusted and handled these
situations in a very professional manner. She planned and
implemented her lessons to meet the learning needs of the
children. For example she ran math and reading workshop times
so she was able to meet with small groups of students on a weekly
basis to check for understanding. She also followed the CCSS and
expanded the lessons with her own ideas, technology, and
materials.

Professional
Responsibility

Student's Professional Responsibility Comments:

I have been actively engaged in professional learning experiences
and I have volunteered as the co-coach for Girls on Run at the
school.
Teacher's Professional Responsibility Comments:
Tessa has an excellent rapport with parents. She was present at
teacher conferences and participated in student-led conferences
where students take responsibility of their learning. She acted in a
very positive and informative manner with our parents. She has

had many opportunities to interact with the parents during drop off
and pick up, organizing parent helpers and activities, attending
IEPs and 504 meetings, and day to day conversations with the
parents that stop by to visit. Tessa was an active member of our
3rd grade planning team and was able to share her ideas and
lessons with our team. Tessa is a very positive person who has
that natural ability to interact with both adults and children.

Student's Technology Comments:

I was able to integrate educational technology into the lessons to
help students build background knowledge while also providing
more visuals.
Teacher's Technology Comments:
Tessa learned early on that using technology in the classroom
helps to build a connection between what is being taught and the
enthusiasm of the learners. She used a variety of videos,
PowerPoints, games using the electronic white board and pens,
pictures, images, etc. to enhance her lessons and their
understanding of the concepts.

Overall
Student
Teacher's
Potential

Student's Summary Comments:

I have grown as an educator while in this third grade classroom
placement. I will cherish the relationships I have built with students
and staff for a lifetime. I know I will be able to take what I have
learned and become and highly effective teacher.
Teacher's Summary Comments:
It is obvious that Tessa's hard work, lesson planning, and teaching
abilities will have a positive effect on many students in the future.
She has the gift to encourage and teach students in many
situations both in the regular education classroom and special
education classroom. She has the energy, enthusiasm, love of
children and passion for education necessary to begin a teaching
career. It was a pleasure to watch her develop. I am very
impressed with Tessa as a teacher, colleague, and friend. Tessa
Heeringa is an educator who will be an asset to any school with
whom she is associated.

Coordinator
Comments

Coordinator Comments:
Ms. Tessa Heeringa successfully completed the general education
potion of her student teaching in a third grade classroom in a
school just north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Having just spent a
semester in a high school for her Special Education student
teaching, she worked hard to adjust her thinking, language, and
expectations for the elementary student. Ms. Heeringa did well
negotiating the curriculum of third grade. She worked closely with
her Cooperating Teacher to meet the needs of her students in all of
the content areas. During her student teaching, Ms. Heeringa was
able to participate in a co-teaching pilot study. She and her
Cooperating Teacher were trained in a co-teaching model and
engaged in many of the seven strategies that were part of the
model. They co-planned, co-taught, and co-assessed, presenting a
true team approach with the students. Tessa has a passion for
teaching that shines in her personality. Coupled with that is a very
strong work ethic. She is organized and structured, yet thoughtful
and insightful. Her personality is delightful. She works well with her
colleagues, showing kindness and patience. There is no doubt that
she will be a fine addition to any staff she is privileged to join.
