Time needed to complete the assignment 1 hour

4.

Materials (ex. Computers, handouts, etc.): Laptop cart, book, rubric, SMART board,

speakers, projector, WIKI site, vocabulary index cards, character index cards, and Journeys
books (Whistle for Willie story).

5.

Learning targets of the lesson: I can

Use details to describe characters from a story

Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters
Use pictures from online to help describe a character

6.

Procedures of the assignment (Steps)

Vocabulary (3 minutes): Using the vocabulary index cards go over the words: Story

Elements, Characters, Setting, Plot, Traits

Video (5 minutes): Watch the Brainpop Jr. Video about Characters.
I do (20 minutes): Read the story:
to the class. Choose the main
character and some words to describe how they look and act. Use details from the story
to support it. Ex: She was brave when she rushed to help her friend.
Using the Smartboard, projector, and internet, I will pull up the class Wiki site. I will have
everyone log onto the site at the same time to view. I will then show students how to add
a sentence to the blog and how to connect a picture using the website. (Discuss to only
use pictures that are free) I will explain that only one person at a time can add a

sentence to the page.

We do (5 minutes): I will select another character and have students help me select

traits to create a sentence and then a picture to describe that character.

You do (20 minutes): I will advise them that they will work in groups of 6. They will follow
the same steps to select a character from the story A Whistle for Willie and click on
their name to get to their page. I will advise that they will use words to describe that
character and details that support their word to create two sentences to post on the blog.
They will then use the site to add a picture for each sentence that helps support the
traits. I will have one person from each group select cards with one of the characters
names. This will let them know which character they will work on and reduce the
problem of one person on each page at a time. Students are to work together to create
the sentences but take turns typing and searching and adding a picture within their

groups. I will introduce the Rubric to the students in which their groups will be graded.
Exit Slip (2 minutes): Students will answer the question at the bottom of the Video on the
home page.

7.

How students will be assessed:

Formative-Rubric to check if students added all of the required elements on their post.

Formative- Students will post on the blog to answer the question about the video they watched.

8.

Accommodations and modifications for students: Students will work in groups and

only have to create one sentence if struggling.
