Students & Sleep, Volume #1

Q: How much sleep do children need per night?
A: According to Science News for Students, children
should be getting about 10 hours of sleep per night! To
achieve this, the American Association of Pediatrics
(AAP) recommends establishing routines which
incorporate the 4 Bs of Bedtime:
1. Bathing: Baths can be soothing for children, and
can help children relax before bedtime.
2. Brushing: Children should brush their teeth right
before bedthe toothbrush should be the last
thing in his or her mouth before going to sleep!
3. Books: Books can serve as a source of comfort
as well as a cue that it is time for bed. This is a
habit that a child can use throughout his or her
life!
4. Bedtime: While you cant force a child to sleep,
implementing a routine will let your child know
that it is time for bed!
The AAP also recommends making sure your childs room is
dark and to use a nightlight for any light in the room!

Next weeks topic: How sleep can impact a childs

noncompliant, as well as being more withdrawn and
anxious (Dr. Dean Beebe, Cincinnati Childrens
Hospital).
Children may also have difficulty interacting with
others as well as exhibiting risk-taking behaviors.
If you think your child is getting enough sleep, but still
exhibiting the above behaviors, the Journal for Sleep
Specialists recommends watching for the following, as
they could be indicators that your child is having
trouble sleeping at night:
Snoring/breathing problems
Difficulty waking up in the morning
Sleeplessness during the day
Mood swings

success at school!

Students & Sleep, Volume #3

Q: Does sleep impact a childs success in school?
A: Studies show that sleep DOES impact a childs
success in school! Dr. Joshua Sparrow claims that
memory is affected by both the brain and sleep.
Therefore, if a child is not getting enough sleep, then
his or her academic success may suffer! In fact, the
American Association of Pediatrics calls a lack of sleep
a serious threat to academic success.
We all want our students to do well in school. Medical
professionals claim that higher academic performance
can be associated with the following:
Waking up later on school days
Early rising on weekends
Taking less time to fall asleep
Few night awakenings
Fewer day time naps
Remember, students need about 10 hours of sleep
per night so that their brains can rest for their next big
day at school!
Next weeks topic: How exercise can aid sleep quality!

Students & Sleep, Volume #4

Q: Does exercise impact sleep?
A: YES! Kids build up a lot of energy during the day. Its
important to give kids an opportunity to burn off this
energy before going to bed. Exercise provides an outlet
for this energy and helps children go to bed feeling
tired. The more vigorous the activity, the bigger the
sleep benefit! (WebMD). Furthermore, children who
exercise on a regular basis tend to fall asleep faster
than other children.
The CDC recommends that children get 60 minutes of
exercise per day. Below are some activities that your
family can do together to achieve this goal!
Riding bikes
Roller blading
Playing at the playground
4-square
Ask your child to teach you a game he or she
plays at school!
Next week: The impact technology has on sleep!

Students & Sleep, Volume #5

Q: Can using technology at night impact my childs
sleep?
A: Yes! Items like iPads, cellphones, computers, etc.,
emit what is called a blue light. Our brains
associated blue light with morning, making it more
difficult to fall asleep. Texts and video games stimulate
our brains, tricking them into thinking we are supposed
to stay awake.
About 70% of children sleep with an electronic device
in their bedroom. Just having a device in the bedroom
can cause disruption in sleep quality. The National
Sleep Foundation recommends putting away all
electronic devices at least 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

alternative to technology before bed
