Academic Standard: Second Grade: Math ACOS #2 Fluently add and subtract within 20
using mental strategies. (See standard 6, Grade 1, for a list of mental strategies.) By end
of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. [2-OA2]

Objectives: Students will be able to..

Add and subtract numbers within 20 using mental strategies.
Identify addition and subtraction while catching the fish.
Understand how fish help our environment.
Materials: 12- inch dowel rod, string, small eye hook, strong craft magnet, hot glue gun,
foam sheets, sharpie, and paperclips.
Duration: 30 Minutes
Grade Level: Second Grade
Diverse Needs: Hands-on to address those with poor verbal skills.

Attention: I say addition and they say add. Then I will say subtraction and the
students will reply and say take away.
Mood: Play nature sounds CD
Review, Relate: Have the students complete addition and subtraction problems
individually.
Warm Up: Each student will be presented with a laminated card with different
subtraction and addition cards. The student will be responsible for solving the problem
and clapping the answer out loud. For example, if a student is presented with 5-2 they
would clap three times.
Vocabulary: addition, subtraction, sum, take away, less than.
Development:
Refer back to the practice addition and subtraction problems and create more challenging
problems if necessary.
Explain that we are going fishing and we will need to count the fish in order to maintain
our pond. Each student will be presented with a fishing pole and go fishing out of pond
that I have created. Each fish will have a number on it and it will be the students job to
add how many fish they have caught. Once all of the fish are caught we will discuss the
importance of throwing the fish back into the pond so they can continue to live in their
own environment.
Questions: How can we save the fish in our environment and still go fishing? Why do
fish like to live in ponds? How did creating visual arts help you to add and subtract?
What are some good reasons we need to be careful while fishing?

Assessments: Observation checklist as groups work. Quick Write in journal for one
minute.
Summary: Using addition and subtraction to understand how fish live in their
environment. Whatever we do to ponds or lakes will cause some negative impact. Being
aware of negative impacts is the first step to being aware of our environment.
